You need to be careful what soap you use, it can strip the oil from the bristles and make them fall out.  Baby shampoo works perfectly (and is usually what make up artist suggest if you aren't going to use the products made specifically for washing brushes).  HTH!

I used to use baby shampoo, but now I use Paula Dorf's Brush Out Bath.

I've just always used liquid hand soap. I've done this for years and years - never had any trouble with my brushes.  :)

I use anti bacterial liquid hand soap and pat dry w/a paper towel.  I've never had a problem with the quality changing.

I use the mac cleaning stuff and it's very gentle on the brushes. It's not THAT expensive, either and may be worth the investment.

ditto on the shampoo, also, make sure you let them dry with the bristles facing down so the clue doesnt dicinigrate (I know i butchered the spelling of that word)

ditto with the baby shampoo.

although my fiance got me the full set of Laura Mercier make up brushes for christmas 2 years ago and when i washed them the first time in baby shampoo they smelled awful!  i ended up purchasing trish mcevoy's brush cleanser and haven't had any problems since.
