Winter Wallop On The WayStorm Warnings Issued For Much Of The Area

(WCCO) Minneapolis It's not if -- it's now when and exactly how much.

"The National Weather Service on Friday morning had issued a winter storm warning for nearly all of Minnesota and portions of Wisconsin.

The warning in the Twin Cities was in effect from 6 p.m. Friday until 6 p.m. on Saturday. Forecasters were predicting snow accumulations from nine to 12 inches in most locations in the area. Depending on where the storm develops, some areas of Minnesota could get as much as 15 to 18 inches.

The intense storm system was supposed to bring two rounds of dangerous weather to the region, including significant snowfall, ice and then blowing and drifting snow.

The first round should start Friday evening and last through Saturday morning.

But then a second round of heavy snow and ice should begin in the late afternoon on Saturday and will continue through Sunday. The weather service predicted that the heaviest snow would occur Saturday night and then would begin to taper off Sunday afternoon.

Stay tuned to WCCO-TV for updates on the weather forecast on Friday and throughout the weekend."

Why couldn't it stay in the 40s? I hate snow! That means I'll probably have to move my car for the snow emergency, which is a major pain in the ass.

I'm sorry girls! I lived in the Twin Cities for a couple of years and the winters were so frightening. I always lived in the midwest, so I thought I was prepared for it, but what literally nearly killed me is the hardiness of the people there. Seriously, you guys don't stop for anything! I once had snow up to my waist surrounding my car and I got reprimanded for being late to work. Where I came from, that much snow meant things might be cancelled or if you were late or absent, it was totally understandable.

Okay, here is a ray of hope. One night they were predicting the "storm of the century." I was in full-on panic mode because I had to be to work early and there was no way out of it without getting fired. Even though I'm not religious, I prayed that it wouldn't happen because I had a piece of shit car with bad brakes and bald tires and I didn't want to die for my stupid job. Well, when morning came, the Twin Cities had maybe a dusting. The storm was so intense, it formed an "eye" like a hurricane. The surrounding areas got hit by a massive blizzard.

Damn, I was hoping the weather people were wrong. It's snowing.  Maybe it won't be as bad as they predicted? Pretty pretty please?? I HATE winter. I am living in the wrong state.

I swore I wasn't going to leave my dorm room all weekend with this snow, and then, come 2:30 am, the fire alarm goes off. Gotta love college.

i thought it was letting up out there and now the national weather service is saying it's gonna get worse! be careful driving, gals!

Weather Service Warns 'The Worst Is Yet To Come'
(AP) Minneapolis Residents in part of southeastern Minnesota were digging out from over foot of snow Saturday even as forecasts called for even more accumulations over much of the state.

The National Weather Service reported as much as 15 inches to 18 inches of snow between Winona and La Crosse, Wis., as of Saturday evening. It was the only part of the state to get hit hard by snow late Friday and early Saturday after initial forecasts said the snow would become heavy Friday night.

Still, the National Weather Service was forecasting heavy snow through much of Sunday from the "long-duration storm," even issuing a report warning "the worst is yet to come."

The snow didn't start falling in earnest until late Saturday afternoon in the Twin Cities, which got sleet earlier, and difficult driving conditions prevailed over a wide swath of the state.

The State Patrol reported close to 200 accidents statewide as of 2 p.m. Saturday, including close to 120 in the Twin Cities metro area, though few involved serious injuries and there were no immediate reports of fatalities.

By Sunday afternoon, the National Weather Service forecast Saturday evening, total accumulations are expected to be in the 14-inch to 18-inch ranges east of a line from St. Cloud through the Twin Cities and Albert Lea.

"It would not be out of the question to see a few localities report close to 20 inches," the Weather Service said, "especially along the Minnesota-Wisconsin border and eastward toward Baldwin and Eau Claire, Wisconsin."

Snowfall totals to the west, including Alexandria, Redwood Falls and Fairmont, were forecast at six inches to one foot.

The combination of high wind and heavy snow was expected to produce whiteout conditions at times in open areas through Sunday.

The weekend's snow has Northwest Airlines issuing a winter weather waiver.

The waiver is for passengers with tickets for travel through Sunday.

Folks traveling to, from or through Minnesota, North and South Dakota and Wisconsin can delay their travel through Tuesday.

They can do that without penalty or administrative fees.

As always when the weather gets bad all passengers should check flight and gate status prior to leaving for the airport.

Stay tuned to WCCO-TV and WCCO.com for the latest weather information.
