"Running With Scissors" - I'm just finishing it and loved it!!!

"The Ruins" by Scott Smith - I haven't read it, but my sister swears it's the best book she has ever read.

don't know what you are in the mood for

but the Harry Potter books are good
Shopaholic series
Memoirs of a Geisha
The Elegant Solution: Toyota's Formula for Mastering Innovation ---about Toyota but they cite all kinds of other companies like ANthropology, IPOD, Lance Armstrong, Tiger Woods, Ford, Chrysler, Cadillac. Dell, etc. I read it this week and it was really interesting

I totally second these . Great books.

For a very intense and moving book I suggest:

Bastard out of Carolina

Blue eyes (toni morrison)

For a lighter book, I just read Stacked: a 32DDD reports from the front

It's a book of essays about, well, boobs. Some of it is tedious, but I finished it in two days because some of it is really interesting, too - she befriends the woman with the largest implants in the world, eats topless at a cafe for a photographer's book, and talks to cross dressers about their desire for breasts.

I haven't read anything else lately, unless you want to hear all about my textbooks!

ETA:
I recommend Dracula for everyone to read. It's definitely spooky in parts, but is is such a good book and very well written.

Some recent favorites:

Atonement by Ian McEwan
Reading Lolita in Tehran by Azar Nafisi
On Beauty by Zadie Smith
Eat, Pray, Love, by Elizabeth Gilbert

I absolutely loved all of these. The first two are a little heavier, but definitely worth it.

Gilead by Marilynne Robinson. Great book, and I think it won a Pulitzer. It's a long letter from an older man to his young son. He's looking at life from the perspective of someone who is going to die soon, but it's not gloomy in the least -- more of a celebration of life, even though that sounds really cheesy.

Infinite Jest by David Foster Wallace.  It's hilarious, entertaining and challenging.

I kind of hate chick lit but I enjoy Jennifer Weiner's books if you are looking for something light:
Good in Bed
In Her Shoes
Little Earthquakes
I think there are a couple of others I'm blanking on.

Books I've enjoyed recently:

Cold Comfort Farm by Stella Gibbons (so funny)
David Sedaris - any of his books, really

And I always recommend her, but Francine Prose, anything she has written. She is probably my favorite contemporary writer.

Right now I love anything by Paolo Coelho. (Brazilian author)

If you type his name in Amazon you'll find a lot of his titles. A lot of his books are about finding who you are.

I totally second this. Most of his books are really great, though my all-time favorite is The Alchemist.

Not sure if this is what you're looking for but I'm currently reading Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell (I've been reading it for awhile - it's looong). It's super good and it's described as Harry Potter for adults, although I think that's misleading. It treats the study of magic as if it's a real subject, like history, and it's set in England in the early 19th century.

It's actually pretty awesome. The bookstore guy told me tons of people are telling him it's the best book they've ever read, period. I wouldn't go that far (beat my Austen and Dosteovsky? I think not) but it's definitely one of the best I've read in a few years.
