So, Mr. Elle and I took all our tax crap in to have them done last week.  We knew we'd be getting refunds all around, and wanted to get them ASAP!

We went to a small local place we used before and liked.  When we got there, the guy who was supposed to do them was out sick, but had not bothered to notify anyone.  There was another guy there, and his appointment had cancelled so he did them instead.

As he entered everything into his little program, he ran into a snag with our state return.  We had to file part-year resident returns in two states, and one seemed to be taxing us on the entire years worth of income, not just what had been made in that state.  He made a note on it to futz with it some more, but said it should look similar to our other state return, where we got back $500.

We hadn't heard anything yet, so Mr. Elle called today.  He went ahead and filed the returns, and left the problematic state return as-is!  The receptionist fed us some line about 'Well, if the computer says that's what it is, that's all we can do'.  Bullshit!  If we wanted to be at the mercy of what some computer program says is right, we'd have done them ourselves!  And the whole reason people go to school for this is so they know how to troubleshoot when shit like this happens!  Baaaaahhhh!  Anyone with one iota of common sense knows that a state cannot tax you on income you earned in another state, while living in another state!

Now the stupid ass tax guy won't call us back.  We're getting $50 back when it should be $500, and now we're going to have to file an ammended return.  I really, really better not have to go in there and point out his mistake to him......

/end tax rant!

I think they may have done it right, depending on the states you lived.  Last year I had t file in a split state and my state charged me for all year and not just the income earned in that state.  When I asked about it I was told- thats just how it is and it sucks, but next year will be better.  I was really mad.  Sorry it happened to you too!

Well, Mr. Elle called the Dept. of Revenue for that state, and was told that that's absolutely not how any state does it!  They can't double tax  you on the money like that, unless you're living in one state and working in another simultaneously.

I'd look into filing an ammended return for last year, if I were you....

OMG just reading your post makes me mad for you!  This happened to my brother, last year he only worked PT and attended school FT (paid for all his books, etc) and had to pay $500.  The tax lady said there was nothing she could do.  This year he went elsewhere and under same circumstances (actually he made a little more $ than the prev. yr.) and he's getting almost $2K back!  So now they're amending 2005's return cuz the tax lady did it wrong.  Its such a pain.  I hope you get everything worked out ASAP.

I totally feel for you. State taxes can be a total PITA. Last year I ended up owing Nebraska almost $2000 and I didn't even live there! They taxed my income because I was in the military and they were my state of residence when I enlisted, which is correct, but they also taxed my husband's income even though we lived in Wisconsin and he worked in Illinois. Apparently because our federal status was married filing jointly, they can tax our entire AGI, not just the portion that was earned in their state. They do give a credit for taxes paid to another state, but Nebraska's tax is considerably higher than Illinois', so even with the credit, we still owed. Super, super sucky considering last year DH made about three times what I did.
