Has anyone else tried to file electronically and had problems? I tried the first time on Sunday and in the dependent deduction line it told me that I qualified for $3,300 in deductions b/c of having one dependent. I don't have any dependents! So, I called there support line and was told that it's a technical glitch in the system and to try again later.
Fine. I cleared my form and tried again tonight. And it did it again! I'm getting really annoyed. I need to get this filed so that I can, 1) get my damn refund and 2) apply for grad school financial aid.
Hmm, mine did that the first time, but it was because my bro hadn't picked Single for my status. You said you cleared everything and started over though, so I don't know what to tell you!
I used H&R block through irs.gov's free file link on Saturday night and had no problems. I checked the status of my return today on the irs website and it was already being processed and said I could expect my return no later than 2/13. Do you have to use Turbo Tax?
I've had trouble in the past with clearing things permanently on Turbo Tax, I can clear them, but they would still show up. What I did I just re-registered under a different user name, everything worked out well after that.

I guess I should have mentioned that I tried that on Sunday. But now I just tried the other H&R Block site and it's still giving me that $3,300 credit! What the hell? This isn't hard. I did it last year and didn't have any issues. I check single and no dependents. How are both of these sites coming up with this? I've done my damn tax return info at least 4 times. I'm ready to scream.
Isn't it normal to get 3K in deductions for claiming yourself as single? Is that what's going on? The way I understand it, it's kind of like you're your own dependent and they give you that allowance because you're supporting yourself.
FH is a CPA and he always does my taxes, but I'm pretty sure that's normal.

Really? I've never heard of that and I'm pretty sure I didn't get it last year unless tax laws have changed. I'll have to take a look at my info from last year and see if that's the case. If so, then I'm all good.
Everyone gets a personal deduction for about $3k. maybe that is what you are looking at. Its built into the programs so maybe this is the first year they have had a screen pointing it out.

This is in addition the standard deductions, though, so that's what concerns me. It's completely seperate and specifically for having a dependent.
Sevilla, I checked last year's return and that deduction wasn't there.

Yep, this is what I was thinking exactly too! When FH gets home I'll ask him too.
Well the 3k is in addition to the Standard deduction. Its called a personal exemption. The only thing that I can think of is that if this is not what it is then maybe there is something being keyed in that is showing a dependent that is not there.

Okay, I see what you're saying now. I previewed my return and it doesn't list dependents there, so I'm good. It's just confusing that it's set up to show exemptions as dependents. I don't remember that from last year. Maybe I'm just excessively tired. Anyway, thanks for the help!
