Anyone know much about these places? I've never been to the Pacific Northwest, but I've always been fascinated by it. I've done alot of online research about both cities (or town, in Ashland's case), but that's all I've got. I may have an opportunity to move to one of those places within the next year and I'm just wondering if anyone can give me opinions or advice on either of this places. Thanks!
Not really sure how much help I can be but the BF and I plan to live somewhere in Oregon as soon as he's finished with his schooling (can I really take five more years of the East Coast???). Also, Elle is in Portland or somewhere close by. She's the one you need to be talking to. Is this for school?

School, work, etc. Yeah. Again, don't want to jinx myself by talking about it too much. My other option is Baltimore and I'm not really a fan of that city, but I guess I could suck it up for school if I had, too. Everything is still pretty up in the air right now, though.
I've been to Ashland before, but it was awhile ago (I think I was about 12). But I remember it as being pretty small, but really cute. I think it's a pretty liberal and artsy town and the surroundings are gorgeous. That's about all I remember.
Portland. I haven't been there, but I know someone who moved there several years ago to work for Nike. He loves it and is always saying we should see it. I also took a photography class recently, the instructor had traveled to the Pac Northwest often and his photography of the geography was beautiful. I have also heard Portland compared to Seattle, as far as the culture goes. (But I am sure that was in reference to how different people are than in the Southwest, where I am.)

I don't know how much this matters to you but there is an article in the NYTimes (I assume today's edition...I read it online) about Portland's public transportation system. Apparently, it's one of the best, most extensive, and most used systems in the country. The article talks about how they just added a new tram system. I personally wouldn't use the tram (oh my god! heights!) but it's cool that a city is that green and commuter friendly.

Elle, thanks for all the info. I may have more questions later for you, but it really sounds like Portland might be a great city for me.
relrel, I love that it's such a green city and that the mass transporation is so good. And I love that Oregon has taken such great steps in preventing sprawl. I actually remember doing speeches and writing papers on sprawl when I was in college, so I would love to live someplace like Portland.
And thanks everyone else for all the info. I'm definitely leaning more toward Portland, simply because it's more of a city than a town.
