Weird Craiglist response to my ad
Permalink Closed

We're selling our custom entertainment center on craigslist.  I received one response asking how much we wanted for it and that he was interested.  Although we listed the price I didnt think it was too weird because we also listed 'OBO'.  I asked him to make an offer and we would decide if we would accept it.

This is his response:
Thanks for your reply.I want you to know that i want the best for both of us in this transaction.I'm willing to pay $xxx, please let me know if you will accept payment with Money order as it's the only way i can pay you at the moment.

I would have loved to come take a look at it  but i am presently out of town. Please send me some pictures,i also want to believe it is in a good  condition. Also, don't fail to reply with your name and your address where payment should be sent, pls i'm particular about the address ,it has to be an address where you can easily get payment cos it could be delivered in the morining or evening .I will let you know how i intend to pick it up.I want you to take the posting off craigslist today.

Expecting to hear from you soon.

I dont understand how he wants to buy it but still wants me to send him pictures and let him know if its in good condition.  We also included a pretty humongeous picture that shows it off really well.  Why cant he wait until he gets back to town?  Why does he keep making sure I give him the right address?  Am I overreacting?  Usually when we have sold stuff on craigslist we meet the buyers by the garage, we never give out our unit #.  Since the garages are on the other sides of the apartments, a stranger cant tell which unit you live at.  He creeps me out.  I dont know if I should respond or what I should say.

This sounds fraudulent. This happens on e-bay all the time. They ask for your address and everything, ask you to take the listing down, etc. I would tell him youre not comfortable sending him your address info. If you dont want to sell to him anymore tell him you found a better offer. I hope everything works out.

Sounds like a weirdo to me - I wouldn't respond, or respond and tell him someone else offered more and was able to pay cash or something.  There's no way in hell I'd give someone who wrote an email like that my name and address!

I wonder if it's a scammer/predator or just a run-of-the-mill weirdo?

I wouldn't respond.  That sounds like a total scam.  It is the sort of thing where the money order will be fake and for more than the amount they are paying.  They will probably ask you to send them the difference.  Even if its not a scam (really sounds like it is), he is too demanding and I don't like that.

I want you to take the posting off craigslist today.

uhhh. no.  Not until he has legitimately paid.

I think he's a scammer, I read through craiglist's warning signs and the "out of town" and "money order" excuse are red flags.

I responded "we accept CASH only and the ad will remain until the buyer physically picks up and pays for the item"

Then I blocked his email address.
