Not sure the prices but the Fitzpatrick and Park South are two Boutique hotels near Grand Central that I've been in and are nice.

In July, we stayed at the Ritz overlooking Central Park, which was only a few minutes' walk from Times Square. It was AMAZING. They were actually remodeling then (and may still be) so it wasn't as pricey as it usually is.

I just stayed at the W hotel on Times Square. The rooms were small, but it definitely did not look like it was out-of-date. The rooms had plasma screen televisions, bliss spa products, very modern furnishings, etc. The hotel is very dark (as in I can't see the elevator buttons to pick my floor/find my room), but in general, I thought it was nice in comparison with some of the other hotels in that area. That being said, it isn't very affordable. My company preferred rate was $470/night (perhaps there will be better rates when you are looking). I got that rate with 3 days advance booking during a huge conference event, so that might have been part of it.

If you are looking for something a bit more affordable, there is the Hudson hotel (this is a boutique hotel about .6 of a mile from Times Square). It is an Ian Schrager hotel - very "designy". Nothing 90's in sight.

I wouldn't recommend the Marriott Marquis. My colleagues were in this hotel and it was definitely 90's.

I recently stayed at Hotel 373, which is Midtown on the corner of 5th and 35th, and really liked it. It was $135/night for what they call a "petite queen room", which is a pretty small room with a queen size bed. I didn't mind the size (and most hotel rooms in NYC are pretty small anyway), esp. at that price.

The hotel is brand new (I think it just opened in fall '06), so it's really clean and decorated well -- very modern. The room had a flat screen tv, radio with ipod docking station, aveda toilettries, pillowtop mattress, fluffy down comforter. I have stayed at the W Union Square and Sheraton Four Points Chelsea in the past year, and 373 was just as good as these hotels considering the price. What you will be missing at 373 that other hotels might have: a lobby -- 373's lobby is tiny and narrow (however well decorated) is separated from a Starbucks by a glass wall, there's no bar or restaurant, no closet/dresser/armoir in the room (there was a desk, nightstand, and one of those folding stands for your suitcase). The bathroom was nice but small. The staff was really friendly and helpful. It sounds like the locaton is where you are looking for also -- and there are 2 subway stops within a couple blocks (at park and 33rd, and 6th and 33rd).
