Post Wisdom Teeth Removal Question
Permalink Closed

I got all 4 of my wisdom teeth removed last Friday (a little over a week ago).  I had a really easy recovery, but now over the past few days, where my lower right wisdom tooth was hurts.  I have some jaw pain, had some headaches, etc.  I had my stitches removed yesterday, and my surgeon told me everything looked great.  I have been using one of those little plungers to get the food out of the holes I have, and when I do, I have some slight bleeding from that right lower hole.  Is it possible I have a dry socket, or is it normal to have some slight bleeding and some pain still?

You could call your surgeon to be sure, but I think that sounds fine.  When I had my wisdom teeth removed, I actually had pain for about a month after surgery.

Really?  Well that  makes me feel better!  Everyone keeps telling me this is normal to still be in some pain and slightly sore, but I got nervous when i saw some blood after flushing out the one hole.  How would I know if I had a dry socket?

Be careful with the plunger thing, you don't want to pull the bloodclot which would give you dry socket.  My dr just had me rinse with tap water after eating.  You don't want to pick and prod.  And I think dry socket from my understanding hurts like a mother, so I think you'd know if you had it.  Just eat lots of ice cream and I'm sure everything will be fine

My doctor gave me the plunger yesterday after removing my stiches and told me to use it after every meal to get the food out of the holes.  I'm not picking w/it..just flushing water into the holes.

Thanks for the advice - I can always use an excuse to eat ice cream

you sound like you are fine but I will say that if you start having horrible pain enough to wear extra strength tylenol does nothing to phase it then you will need to start talking to the surgeon about a dry socket.  I had 2 and it was terrible.  I am a mouth breather and not a very good bleeder so I lost my clots within 24 hours (surgery fri morning) and was dying until the doctors office opened on monday morning.  Its one of those things where you will just know if you get one.  I think your window of opportunity for one is over though.

Oh so you can only develop a dry socket in the first few days?  If that's the case, I should be ok.  I'm just worried - is it normal to still have some pain over a week after my surgery?  I've been taking Tylenol and that definitely helps the pain.  I think I'm mostly freaked out seeing a little blood come out of the one hole.  Is that normal?

from what I've heard I think you usually develop the dry sockets right after you have the surgery while its still trying to clot.  I'm not an expert though so I'm not 100% sure on that.

I think some pain should be normal based on what had to be done and how big your mouth is.  I know one of my friends had severe bruising so she was in pain for a while but it went away with the bruises.

Its been a while so I can't remember what my flush out looked like.  I think there might have been a little bit of blood at first but who knows.

Welcome to the club! I just got mine taken out a little over two weeks ago. I noticed bleeding too once in awhile, even a week afterwards. I think it's partly just because my gums were so sensitive. I didn't get a syringe thing to rinse out my hole(s), so I just use water after pretty much every bite of food to make sure that there's nothing in there. Also, make sure you do salt water rinses in your mouth (so gross), it will really really really help with the healing. And if you had dry sockets I think you would know because my friend got them and they are like, extreme pain.
One more thing... your mouth could also be hurting because your teeth are shifting, which is something that I noticed just this weekend. I'm getting a retainer made since I had braces and I don't want my teeth to get crooked or anything.

Thanks Calico! I'm glad to know I'm not alone in going through this Thanks for the tip on the salt water rinses - I'll try that out!
