I took off from work during the last week of December bc I had one extra vacation day. I figured I would use this opportunity to shop in peace, make my Xmas returns and new purchases using gift cards I had received.
My first stop was Macy's in Queens Center Mall. I went to the juniors department to return a sweater that I had gotten as a gift. Although the sales person fumbled to understand the receipts I presented to her, she eventually put the credit on my gift card. I then had a hat to return, but didn’t have the receipt with it. She called the manager who looked at me with attitude and said “What do you want me to do with this??? You have no receipt!” I said it was a gift, you can give me store credit, or I will exchange, I didn’t care. She said “Well you have to do that in the hat section!” Ok so I go to the hat section, which was closed.
I went to the purse section and clearly stated, “Hi how are you, I’d like to return this hat and exchange it for these slippers” (holding up the slippers to her). The sales lady began the process, it took 4 solid minutes to type the word C-H-R-I-S-T-I-N-A. So when she asked my last name I just gave her my license. She then presented me with a receipt stating that I will have a store credit in the amount of $11 mailed to me within 3 months. I asked why would you send me a store credit when I’m in front of you exchanging? She said I never told her I was exchanging, she didn’t see the slippers. Whatever.
So I then went to return a white gold anklet I received. I went to the diamond counter and asked where to do such a thing. She sent me to the bracelet counter. After waiting 10 minutes to get the attention of the bracelet lady, she sent me to the counter next to her. I waited another 10 minutes and this new lady sent me back to the previous counter bc she only specializes in silver, not gold. At this point I am annoyed and tired of the run around. I didn't even bother returning it.
Finally, I figured I would treat myself to a nice pair of shoes and turn my luck around. I tried on about 7 pairs, and of course the ones I liked were not in the size I needed so I ended up walking away… No one’s fault there but the whole day was just such a waste of my time, I won’t be going back any time soon. The customer service level is horrible at Macy’s. I get better service at the 99 cent store.
That's annoying. You couldn't just return all the pieces to customer service or something? I'm pretty sure my Macy's has a customer service desk, but it is kind of hidden away on the very top floor in the corner. That's weird that you'd have to return them all seperately... its not like they're all different stores! Giving you the run-around is horrible, it sounds like no one knew what anyone else was in charge of, or even themselves!

I had a horrible Macy's experience just before Christmas. I was looking at leather gloves spread out on a table but couldn't find my size in the color I wanted so I asked the girl at the glove counter which was right behind me. She said that the entire stock of those gloves was on that table. I didn't believe her but I asked her to see which other stores had my size. According to the computer system, that store had four pairs so she starts "looking" in the cases, not even on the table where the gloves were. So I asked if maybe there was a box under tha table with more gloves, as I used to work in retail and that was a common practice. She tells me that I can go look and see. What? She wasn't planning on doing it for me or even helping me and she was not doing a single thing besides standing behind the counter. After standing there for a minute I went and found the boxes under the table and crouched down on the floor looking for these gloves that were not even there. I left them sprawled out on the floor and was so angry I just had to get out of the entire store.
I really wonder where they find these people or if they are all seasonal employees who could care less about customer service.
They hired me seasonally before Christmas and "trained" me for one day on a fake register before throwing me out on the floor. Most of the time I was left on a register by myself with tons of Christmas shoppers. It was awful because I didn't fully know what I was doing and I didn't know a lot about the product yet but there was never anyone around to help me. I think the problem is that they are completely understaffed...we had maybe 3 or 4 people working on 5 counters when really there should be 2 people behind each counter.
Anyway, Macy's really sucks, but I blame the company and not the salespeople. They were not a great company to work for at all.

I'm not a frequent Macy's shopper, but my brother is currently a seasonal employee and has nothing but wonderful things to say about his direct superiors/store management and the company. He rings up stuff and processes returns/exhanges for multiple departments.
I would blame store management (for not training the employees properly and hiring people who can't spell...sheesh!). Did you make a formal complaint to them?
(FWIW, it sounds like you're in NYC, but his Macy's is in the Palisades Center in West Nyack)
Back when Macy's was Hudsons I worked there and HATED it with a passion. The management sucked, and hid in the back all day. When they became Marshall FIelds, I got mad at them in 2 seperate incidents, and swore them off completely. Now that they are Macy's, I may give them a second chance, but I'm not expecting a different experience, and will probably not shop there either.
