more on my hair color dilemma...alas (long)
Permalink Closed

I have posted about this before, but here is an update.  Any advice?

I have been heavily highlighted blonde for about 5 years and recently went back to my natural haircolor of medium brown. My hair was like this

and I had it colored brown like this

My haircolorist used permanent color to take me back and I starting hating it after a couple of days. To make me happy, she put a few foils on the top of my head and used a color to lighten those strands a little. This was 5 weeks ago. Well I decided that I just want to go back blonde like in this picture and went for an appointment yesterday.

However, my hair colorist refused to do it saying that we needed to do it in stages so that I would sustain less damage. She said that I need to come back in 5 weeks for her to do a conditioning treatment and then 3 weeks later we will go a little further. She said that every time I came back we would go a little more blonde until we got there and that she could not use bleach because that would be too damaging. She said she is going to lighten it with color. She uses Redken products.

She told me I had a little breakage in the back but that everywhere else it felt good. She trimmed the dead ends (my hair is long)

Now, I don't doubt her abilities because she does haircolor fantastically. She can make your haircolor look like any pic you show her. However, isn't hair dead anyway? Isn't it impossible to repair hair? Is she right in saying that I will sustain less damage if we do the lightening in stages? Should I just find another hair colorist that I trust and tell them to do my hair like that in the pic of Michelle Pfeiffer.

Well, I emailed a friend of mine who is a chemist and has done hair color in the past.  This is her response:

She's an idiot.

Hair is definitely not alive. It is impossible to repair hair. Going blonde gradually, especially if you've just done a tintback, is a recipe for disaster.

You will not sustain less damage if you do the lightening in stages.

The only way to get your hair light again, without excessive damage, is to use a reducing type color remover like ColorFix to remove the artificial color. After that, you bleach and tone. Unfortunately, many colorists try to use bleach to lighten artificial color. It works, but it's not very effective and it really beats up on the hair. Removing the artificial color first is much less damaging to the hair.

Unfortunately, I can't say whether your hair can handle the color removal followed by re-bleaching. If it's already slightly damaged in the back (some breakage), it probably will not handle the process without breakage. Doing what your colorist recommends will result in much more breakage.

Um, honestly, I wouldn't do anything else to your hair right now. It just sounds risky...

I am no expert but I think I would agree with your stylist.  It sounds like she has your interests in mind, if she didn't care she would have just done what you wanted.  It sounds reasonable to go back to blonde in stages and maybe you will find a shade in between that you love.  Dying and highlighting then bleaching is definately a recipe for split ends and breakage, as well as coarse hair.

how long is your hair?  I honestly wouldn't do anything to it myself as well.  Can you maybe have another set of highlights on dark parts and wait til it grows out before dying it blonde again?  I think healthy darker hair will look a lot better than bleached straw hair.

Thanks for the advice.  My hair as far as its length is almost halfway down my back.  I had few lengths cut into it last week, but not very many.  I guess my main concern is that I want to wear whatever haircolor makes me look younger.  I am 36 and I have always heard that you should go lighter as you get older because it makes you look younger.  I am not sure what I believe about that.  What do you think about hair color and the age issue?

I think you should leave your hair alone as well. It's long - and healthy hair is going to look better than unhealthy hair (no matter what the color!).

I don't think you should base your hair color on your age...I think you should base it on what looks best for you.

Do you have photos of your current color?

i don't know if agree that lighter hair is better as you get older.  I think it has more to do w/the coloring of your hair (maybe it needs to be warmer?  do you feel like it is washing you out?) and skin.  Also, a lot of people have to change their makeup/clothing colors when they change hair colors.  Maybe you could start experimenting with that to make your haircolor and features pop.  I have medium brown hair, cool pale skin that can tan (summer skin?  remember that 80's skin coloring book w/seasons?), and blue eyes.  I find a pinkey/mauve lipstick makes my skin glow more than peach or brown colors (i like stila's sheer lipstick in natalie), and navys and purple work well on my eyes(though everyone says these colors are best for brown eyes- i find traditional blue eye shadow colors- rusts and oranges and golds- look off w/my skin tone).  A bronzer also helps sometimes.

I know where you are coming from, Bloomie. I really want to go back to brown, but my hairdresser always says I look younger with lighter hair. I'm tired of highlights and the damage. Maybe Lynnie is right about playing around with makeup, etc.

I agree with the other girls.  Hair may not be alive but you can still fry the crap out of it.  Split ends look horrible, right?  Don't risk it.  I think you'd be better off with healthy brunette hair rather than dried out shine free blonde.  Use this as a time to play with new make up!

hair isn't alive, but i definitely can tell the difference when hair is treated well! (deep conditioned, heat protectants used, etc)

i said this before, but DO NOT use a color remover all over your hair! it is bleach, and used all over will just make your hair fry city.

you cannot lift color with color. i mean, sure you can get a little bit of lift if you use 40 volume, but basically it will not be what you want to see. (well, ok, there are some products that lift color with color, but they also have bleach in them AND you have to use them with high volume developer...which i don't think is any more gentle than bleach)

while i don't think you necessarily *need* to wait, i would personally need to see and feel your hair to see what it can stand up to! (though if i were you, i would wait it out a bit)
