breaking up with your stylist?

for the past three or so years i've been going to the same hair stylist.  i really love her and she does great work, but she is on the expensive side: just under $100 for a cut, not including tips for her and the assistant.  (it's an aveda salon, and they give you a little shoulder and scalp massage at the beginning with some scented oils, and then later you get a hand massage towards the end of the haircut.)  the whole experience is very enjoyable and i love going, but i'm trying to cut back on spending as my BF and i save up for a home/marriage/etc.  also, my hair is shorter now and i've been getting it cut more often, so it's adding up.

she's about to go on maternity leave so i'm thinking of trying another, less expensive place in the meantime.  if the other place does a good job i may just keep going there instead.  what is the right way to "break up" with my current stylist, though?  i feel sad about it because i like her a lot as a person but i don't want to keep shelling this out either.

This one is tough, however your reson for "leaving" is completely warrented.  I think you have 2 options.  You could either find someone new when she goes on maternity leave and leave it at that.  Or you could just be honest with her, tell her whats going on and explain how much you like her and that you wish her the best.

i'm sure she will understand. you shouldn't feel guilty at all. maybe get her a small baby-related gift as a goodbye and explain. i'm sure you will both miss each other, but if it doesn't work out elsewhere, you can always go back.

I also like Aveda products but like you, hate spending hundreds of dollars on my hair.  I found an Aveda "school" which is here in my hometown.  I'm not sure where you live but you might want to check this out.  Now the pros and cons of using the school:

Cons:

-You have to make your appointment farther in advance than most other salons.

-You are getting worked on by a student and you can't request the same person (but you CAN request the same instructor each time-at mine the instructor I use remembers "my" formula and it always works out).

Pros:

-It is Aveda through and through.  You still get the hand massage, the free mini facial, etc.  They also bring around tea and water.  They have an Aveda retail store right in the salon.

-The salon is as nice as any normal salon.

-They have every service imaginable-spa manicures and pedis, waxing, makeup application, all hair services, etc.

-My experience has been good everytime.  There have been times my hair wasn't jusr right to which an instructor would just fix it and I end up walking out happy.  I actually have better luck here with my hair coming out looking good then at normal salons because the instructors are always right there checking you out and obviously you don't get that kind of attention at a normal salon.

-The best part-this place is SOOO inexpensive.  Haircuts ar $12, manicures $15, pedis around $25.  I always get a haircut and partial foil highlights and it costs under $50!

I'm not sure where you live but here is a link to a directory of the schools:

When I changed stylists, I didn't even tell the lady... I just quit going to her

but if you're friends and you've been with her for a long time, you could send her a card and a little baby gift, and just say you really love her but because you're looking forward to marriage and a home, you have to cut back financially in all areas. She'll surely understand.

Don't feel bad about not telling your former stylist.  In the past I've never "given notice," and just stopped going.  This time I feel differently because we've gotten to know each other, and I was also referred to her by a friend.  That's a good idea about the card -- thanks.
