Tips or Tricks please...
Permalink Closed

Alrighty I am trying to train myself to watch how much I drink but I'm not doing too well when it comes to social functions.  I do fairly well when it comes to recruiting dinners I go on, dinners at restaurants with friends, peoples houses, etc with mixing in food and water between drinks.

But for the life of me I'm having issues with Company happy hours and the annual christmas party.  This year I thought the brilliant and simple solution would be to stick with wine cause last year the mixed drinks were really bad.  Well of course that wasn't the smartest thing and yet again I was drunk faster than I thought.  I really don't want to be that drunk girl that gets really chatty with my friends and says things I shouldn't. Besides laying off the alcohol completely anyone have any tips/tricks in trying to train yourself?

A good preventative measure in the way of hangovers is to drink a glass of water between all drinks. It's good because it keeps you hydrated - but it also slows you down, so you don't have a chance to drink as much alchohol

good luck!

This may sound obvious, but don't forget to eat!  I have the lowest tolerance, and even two drinks on an empty stomach can render me pretty drunk, so if I know I'm going to a party where there will be drinks and appetizers, but no big meal, I try to eat something substantial before I go -- a sandwich, cheese and crackers, etc. That way the alcohol doesn't go straight to my head.

Oh, and don't drink with a straw.  You'll drink much more slowly without one. Hope that helps!

I'm a lightweight too (it's cheaper). And yes, eat, drink a lot of water. And make sure you order something that requires sipping, rather than say, a margherita that's easy to just suck down. Oh, and personally, wine hits me FASTER and HARDER than anything else. Gin and tonics or vodka tonics have been pretty manageable, or, if the crowd wont' judge you, beer. You can also fake a drink by ordering tonic water with ice, or pineapple juice.

Yes, yes, yes. Drinking a glass of water between beverages is KEY to not getting drunk too fast. It also cuts down on your caloric intake because you don't drink as much. (Hmmm, you can tell I've put a lot of thought into this. ) Also try counting your drinks. I try to set a limit for myself before the evening starts, usually based on time I'll be there/crowd/driving situation/food/etc. If it's a work thing, absolutely no more than 2 drinks for me, because next thing you know I'll be telling my boss I used to think he was an asshole but now (with arm wrapped around him) I think he's a pretty cool dude. Not even kidding.

Thanks for the tips.  I might need to stay away from wine and try a mixed drink although sat night apparently they were using top shelf liquors and doing a splash of coke with the crown.  I'll have to research a pretty mild drink for next time.  The funny thing was that I ate like a pig at home - chicken, rice, veggies had dessert there but nothing seemed to help.  Oh well.  Apparently I only said a few things to some mutual friends so nothing too embarassing.

I like the idea of putting a number count limit maybe I can try that next time.  Something psychological/mental usually helps.

do you suck down the drinks because you're uncomfortable?  If so, I usually have a drink before I leave the house (I'm in nyc, so i don't have to then operate a vehicle) and then limit myself to 2 or 3 drinks.  OR better yet- I drink as much as I want to - and limit my conversations with people.  HA.  I've gotten pretty good at pretending to be sober-ish when I'm pretty sloshed.  That's the fun way!

my work get togethers usually consist of before dinner drinks, wine with dinner, after dinner drinks and then "lets go to another bar" drinks and then "lets have drinks at the hotel bar" drinks...

*sigh*  somehow, i manage to hang... and i think its b/c i order water with every drink.  just like the other girls suggested, i drink water between (and with) all of my drinks... and i think it makes a BIG difference.  counting for me doesn't work b/c i lose track...

good luck!

Malibu and pineapple is a super tasty drink and it is very weak.

No no! The key is to not drink super tasty drinks (or as my bf says "liquid candy"). Then you will drink lots and fast because they are so good. If you drink something not as yummy, you might drink less.

A good trick is also is to order drinks "tall"- enough mix for a double but only one serving of alcohol. Makes them weaker.

I like all these ideas and will have to put them into practice at my firm holiday party.  Generally, I just drink perrier with lime at these events.  Or, I'll have a vodka soda...and try to drink slowly.  Office parties are kind of stressful.  DH and I normally go out drinking afterward to celebrate making it through another holiday gauntlet.

Thanks yall.  I think in those types of situtations I think I have to be constantly drinking something.  Doesn't matter what.  But usually super sweet drinks I don't particularly care for and won't drink a lot of them so I might try malibu and pineapple.  Plus I don't particularly care for coconut so it might work.

Anyways the point is I appreciate the tips and will definetly try each one out

one good tip that i don't put into practice often enough is to order wine spritzers. if you like wine, it's like having 50% less alcohol, but you will still like the taste and get to hold a wine glass.

the only thing is that you have to order them at the bar alone (or maybe just with a sympathetic b-f) because it's slightly old-ladyish and embarrassing sometimes!

I am the lightest light-weight ever, and I have a few things that I do: order my drinks weak... very weak, order something I don't really like, or fake a drink.
