The week of Nov. 13, I was in Philadelphia on business. I flew United in on Saturday and was scheduled to fly back out on Nov. 16.
On Nov. 14th, my sister called me and told me that my brother-in-law passed away. I immediately called and changed my flight. A United rep told me that there was a $100 fee for changing my flight. I told her I didn't care- I needed to be home immediately to be with my family.
I got the airport and the gentlemen who checked me in said there was in fact a bereavement clause and he was adjusting my e-ticket to a paper ticket in order to submit it for refund.
today, i am going through my bills, mail, etc. and i come across a letter from United with a "ticket" and my receipt. Next up is my CC bill which is still charged $100 from United with no refund.
I call CS at United and can't get ahold of ANYONE in the refund department. Its all automated circles.
My bosses told me initially when all this happened to charge the money back to work. I, however, feel bad doing that b/c it is not works fault my BIL died and at this point, its the principle of the matter that United went back on their word.
You'll eventually need to get ahold of someone at AA. But what they'll need, unfortunately, if a copy of the death certificate. The funeral home will be able to provide you with one. We had to do this when my DH's mother passed away. Good Luck!

thanks collette. my sister has copies of the death certificate and I'll just keep trying to get ahold of someone at United. those automated systems are impossible!
Is it possible that it will just take 1-2 billing cycles to show up on your credit card? I book travel through United all the time for my boss, and when something like a credit has been issued, they always tell me it might not show up right away.

This is my trick, but one day it backfired on me. I cannot remember what company I was calling, but I kept pressing "0" and the voice kept saying that was an invalid option and then finally it hung up on me!
