We just got back from NYC with the inlaws - they paid for nearly everything on our trip. I sent the stepmom a very nice bouquet today - do I still need to write a thank you note? I had my stationary out but now it seems like overkill?

I would go ahead and send it.  I don't think you can ever say thank you enough and it will show that you truly are appreciative.  Go with your gut!

I would definitely write a note.  That generation seems to love handwritten notes, at least from my own experience with family.
