I highly recommend Stila eye shadows.  They have this 3-pan:


which is $8 empty.  I've found that their eye shadow Kitten is perfect for everyday use. 


It's a great neutral and it has a little shimmer to it that's really pretty.  It's also beautiful if you lightly brush it over the top of your cheekbones for a little highlight.


For some reason, the website won't let me copy and paste the colors in here, but just from looking here, I think these colors would look pretty with your coloring:


Espresso
Tone (I have this and it is GORGEOUS--it's more brown than it looks in the pic)
Jade
Eden
Java

i'm a huge Fresh eye shadow (and everything!) fan- all of their colors are flattering and it wears really well.

I second NCshopper's comments on Kitten - it is my favorite shadow ever.  I have similar coloring to you, based on your description:  dark hair and eyes, but pale skin.
