colors you wear?
Permalink Closed

Do you generally stick to colors you know are particularly flattering, or do you buy things in a variety of different colors? I know I probably don't pay as much attention to this as I should. I definitely gravitate towards red and burgundy and blue, which are probably my best colors, but have lately been finding myself really drawn to mustard and saffron yellows, which look awful on me. I guess the trick is that if I must have something that color, to get it in a skirt or an accessory that isn't right next to my face, or to stick with things like the yellow tank I just got, which I layer cardis over. But I definitely get suckered in sometimes if I really like the style of a piece, and get in in a color that isn't great. Thoughts?

I generally don't like pastel colors. I like dark, rich, bright colors. I don't know if I am jut egotistical or blind, but I think most of the darker toned colors work for me. I have an obsession with dark purple, burgany, and mustard...those are my faves.

I look dreadful in light pinks and tans.

i would like to pick a nice palette and stick with it for everything, but unfortunately my closet is kind of a mish-mash of every color. i don't think i look good in pale colors because i am very pale, but it doesn't stop me from wearing them!

(looking at my closet, though, most of my clothes are black, or jewel tones)

Definitely I stick to colors I look best in. Such as:

- teal. Every time I find a teal top or sweater (which is surprisingly difficult!), I grab it - assuming the cut is flattering as well.

- garnet red. One of my FAVORITES and sure to garner compliments.

- chocolate brown

- nearly any shade of green (I have green eyes, and a nice forest or emerald green really makes them pop a bit more)

- ivory. I don't look good in white, sadly (though I wear it sometimes anyway, but usually with a sweater / top / jacket over it in a color that's better for me), so I go with ivory.

- deep pink. Like Kitty, I don't look good in any pastels (with the exception of mint green, which I don't really wear because it doesn't go with much else in my jewel-toned wardrobe). I can't wear pale pink, but a deep rosy pink or a fuchsia is perfect.

- charcoal gray. Heather gray is like taupe, or navy, for me - I look so washed out (I am the pale-skin queen, with dark hair), but charcoal does wonderful things.

- I've worn a ton of black over the years, but lately I'm not sure I look so wonderful in it. It's hard to avoid though, because it seems like *everything* comes in black...and it's so easy for travel and such. So there's still a good bit of black in the closet. But more as bottoms than tops.

I'll wear the colors listed on top or bottom. Colors I still like, but can't wear near my face, I'll wear as bottoms, such as burgundy / plum, or beige-y or lighter brown bottoms.

Subconsciously, I pretty much stick to a certain set of colors. It's less because I think that only a certain palette is flattering and more just because of what I'm drawn to. Black, grey, white and tan are the staples of my wardrobe and then my favorite colors to wear are various shades of red, brown and pink with some kelly green things thrown in because I just love that color. I never do blue or yellow (I don't think I own a single blue or yellow anything in my closet!) and rarely do colors like teal, lavendar, etc.

I have no idea if these colors are the best on me (I hope so!) but they're what I love and always gravitate to, so I think that's alright. Go for the saffron if you love it! It's fun to have a signature color.

My favorite colors are purple, green, and a dark raspberry pink, and I do tend to gravitate toward clothes in those colors.  However, I definitely have a little bit of everything in my closet.

I try to always wear a bright color near my face.  I find too much black or white makes me looks pasty.  Charcoal gray or olive are better neutrals for me.

When I'm shopping, I tend to see color before I see shape.  I'm attracted to pieces because of the color first.

My color choices are similar to Kitty and Atlgirl's.  Jewel tones, especially blues, greens, and reds, are the best.  I have to avoid pastels; they completely wash me out.  It's amazing the difference that color can make.  I can go from looking pale and drawn to alive and fresh, just based on what color I'm wearing that day.

I love black, grey, camel, and other neutrals, but when I wear them I have to be sure to wear a bit more blush and lip color to compensate for the lack of color in my clothing!

I love the colors that make me look happy and well.  I'm tired and cranky enough of the time for work that if I didn't, I would look terrible.  So, I like peach, all sorts of pinks, reds, some greens, teal and ivory.  For those colors like beige or camel that make me look ill - I wear as pants or skirts.  Or bags :)

I have a variety of colors. I definitely have more purples and pinks, which I know I look good in. I wear those if I want to look especially good. I stay away from colors I know make me look awful, like yellow, certain reds and certain greens. Everything else is kind of just a variety. I don't have a specific palette, but I do keep my most flattering and unflattering colors in mind while shopping. I won't pay for something that will make me look washed out.

I generally stick to jewel tones as well and add in brown, black, grey, and olive green as my neutrals.  I can wear light pink if I'm a little heavier handed on the blush and lip gloss, but other than that, no pastels for me.  If I have to add in a color I love but doesn't look good on me, then I try to keep it as an accessory and away from my face.  The only exception in my closet is my mustard yellow Target blazer, which I love.

Me too. I go for brown, plum, and teal above other colors. I also like grey, navy, and tan/camel.

A few colors I don't even own are yellow, orange, and true red. I have some white things, but try to avoid them due to my ability to get them stained withing 2 seconds of putting them on.

I try to buy colors that look good on me. I like basic white tees, but now I don't think I look so good in white. I think dark blues compliment my blue eyes, so I usually buy stuff in that color, though I tend to stay away from the pale blues. I think dark greys and black look good on me too. I never buy anything in red, orange, or yellow. Not much in green either.

If I do not watch myself when I shop I tend to always buy white, ivory, black and shades of grey.  In the past year I have branched out into navy, dark greens to complement my eyes, and camel/tan.  I try so hard to buy different color clothing but most seems to make me look ill -i have started buying colorful bags and shoes to spruce up the monocromatic palatte.

I love earthy colors.  Browns, greens, deep reds, oranges -- but I am trying to add more color to my wardrobe.  So I've picked up some purples and pinks this year...and I've ordered a blue sweater to try out.  I'm not fond of yellow but I love ochre colors.  This is also the first year I've added any gray to my wardrobe.

I have a real thing for white and cream. Which sucks because I also have a real thing for brightly-colored bras, and I can only wear nude ones with all the light colors I wear.

First-time poster...yay me.

It's fine to be drawn only to certain colors - at leat you'll wear them. Mine are reds, pinks, burgundies, and plums. Of course I get suckered by the occasional other color, but I usually go back to my first loves.

Some colors are just problematic for matching more so than flattering - browns, greens and blues are terrible for me in terms of coordinating. I look fine in some, but I don't care. I just don't need the complications in my life.

Long ago I realized that not having a certain color in my wardrobe was not a license to buy that color...in other words, if I see a great pair of navy slacks, I don't buy them thinking 'oh, I don't have anything like this.' At this point I figure if I don't own and wear something in that color, I don't really need it. Now I've successfully weeded out a lot of common colors just for the sake of simplicity, and I am very glad I did.
