Looking for a hair brush.
Permalink Closed

I have been growing my hair out for the past year, and it has recently reached past shoulder length. I am having problems getting it to de-tangle  when I brush it in the morning. Using a comb works, but my hair is so think it takes for ever to comb it smooth.

What kind of brush do you girls with long hair use?

Cat,
Do you comb starting at the bottom and working to the top? I actually brush less and less the longer my hair gets. It's down to mid-ribcage and I haven't brushed it in 6 months. I'm worried that a brush would snag more than a comb.

Sorry, if this is a useless response.

Most the time I have been combing from the top down, unless there is a snarl at the bottom then I start there.

Hmmm...maybe I would be better off getting a new comb, the one I have now is kind of small.

I've heard that combs are better for wet hair, but honestly I couldn't handle using a comb everyday. It would take forever and my hair isn't even really insanely long.

Mine's about to my shoulders and I use a brush like this:

Not this exact one, but with those kind of teeth.

Thanks ttara. I'll have to go look for a brush like that.

I feel so clueless when it comes to having long hair.

I use a paddle brush, or a widetooth comb to brush it after I shower.

This is obvious, but do you ever use detangler? I love the Johnson's kids stuff.

My mom suggested a detangler a few weeks ago,and it does seem to be helping.

Hey Cat,

I would use a wide tooth comb for comb outs after shampooing. The one that I absolutely cannot live without (and Kari will attest to this), is this bone tail comb. They sell them at Sally Beauty supply and they are only about $5.00. http://www.sallybeauty.com/shop/1810/152002

My Mom has been using them in her salon for years, and I don't think I'll ever switch!

But if you do want a new brush, go with an all natural Boar Bristle, they're a little expensive, but so much better for your hair. Much less breakage....

Also, for the best combout with sooo many fewer breaks, always, always, always, start at the bottom and work your way up...

HTH~

It sounds to me like your shampoo and conditioner are not working for you. I have a lot of hair and it is very fine. I actually just cut mine from lower back to just below my shoulders. Even when my hair was really long it never took me more than a minute or two to comb my hair, If it did it was because i tried a new yucky shampoo. I have always used either a wide toothed comb or pick to comb my hair when it is wet and a paddle brush when dry.

I know you did not ask but I have found that for a cheap shampoo the aussie root tip shampoo was great. It didnt dry my hair out but I wasnt limp, weighed down or greasy. For something a little higher end I like bumble and bumble coco or thickening shampoo. I find I only need to condition once a week (but i have hair that gets oily easily). hth.

Thanks Deuce. I have been wondering if maybe it was my shampoo. I've been using herbal essence, but they did change their formula about a month back.
