Should my surgery date be cooperative, I am planning on tagging along with my husband on one of his business trips to India in February.  He has been there in a business capacity several times (he was in Mumbai and Pune this week, actually) but not so much in a tourist capacity.  I'd like to start planning now, and besides the taj mahal, what are some other must see/do things you can share with me from your travel experiences there? Of course I'll get a guide book, but STer recommendations would be great. I'm trying to think who's been there - Halah, Montmarte, Maddie (who is in Sri Lanka right now) -- or anyone else who has been there that can share some ideas, I would appreciate it! TIA

ETA: one place my husband did mention he was interested in was Goa, which is a 16c. Portuguese settlement and has historical and beach attractions - has anyone been there?

ETAA: I am also thinking about New Delhi, Calcutta and maybe Kathmandu? Has anyone been to Nepal?

That's great!! I wasn't able to go to India this year,  but my friend who lives in  Bangalore recommended the state of Kerala as a must see for its backwaters. I'm hoping to check it out next year, esp since National Geographic ranked it as one of the top 10 paradises on earth.

Hey D,

What a fun trip!  So you're kind of open to where in India you'll travel?  I'm actually emailing back and forth with a friend who went to Dehli after we were in Mumbai earlier this year AND I'm trying to get off work so I can see a friend get married in Dehli Dec 9th -15th.  I'm asking them both for advice on Dehli and surrounding areas so I'll share with you what I find.

I'm working in Houston this week so I don't have all my books and stuff with me to remind me where I went but from what I remember...

Mumbai is great for temples and shrines.  Out of all the sight-seeing I did the visits to the different temples really stuck with me the most.  I reccomend Haji Ali, which is the shrine on the rocks, it's very humbling experience to walk through all of the poor and physically challenged beggers asking for alms.  For shopping in Mumbai I had the best luck at department stores (I asked our driver where his wife went to shop) they had fixed prices and just as nice of a selection of saris and shawls as the touristy places that were outrageous.  I can also tell you a place where we all got shirts custom tailored for about 20 bucks a shirt (just can't remember the name now).

Gateway to India in Mumbai all though kind of a tourist trap (Just a big monument at the waters edge) is still interesting just to watch all the people and then walk the streets around that area.  The "Hanging Gardens" was a nice escape at the top of a hill in Mumbai, it was so peaceful and gave you a beautiful view of the city below.

Happy planning!

too funny- i was just signing in to ask about Goa! My family is going there for 4 days in December (plus 10 days in Mumbai visiting family) and I would love input on what to do.

D, i can update you after my trip!

However, before your or Halah make plans to travel to Delhi, apparently there have been outbreaks of dengue fever, which is passed on by mosquitos. We had a trip planned to Delhi but cancelled it, as our family members/travel agent didn't feel Delhi would be safe yet.

hth!

my husband was in Delhi last week - apparently 3 people died from dengue fever - it made him a little nervous.  the worst he walked away with was a case of what he likes to call "Delhi belly" - he's been sick for two weeks now and is continuing on in Korea and China, poor guy.

please do share your December trip with us when you return!

I just booked my trip!  Banglore Dec 8-13 and then Delhi 13-15 for a friends wedding.  I'll share any good tips I find out.

I thought I was doing good having had all my shots and malaria pills refilled now there is something new to worry about!!! Dengue Fever.  I was paranoid on my last trip and used 30% DEET everyday and wore longsleeves and pants...guess I need to stock up on some more DEET.
