any Shopping Ban girls out there?
Permalink Closed

Well, since people haven't been posting as much since they're trying to save money, I thought it would be a good time to do a Shopping Ban check-in.

How is everyone doing? Tell us the rules for your ban (how long, monthly allowance, etc.) and any tips you have for sticking to it. Any moments where will-power trumped a fashion craving?

ugh. I should be on a ban. there's just too many damn bargains out there! I'm trying to stay away from the sites I check often for deals (zappos, bluefly, overstock), and focus on eBay purchases. I also have to go gung ho and return a bunch of stuff.

besides returning my husbands xmas presents and buying him an ipod for xmas instead, I need to go on a ban too... other than that, I have all my xmas shopping done already!

My Ban:

  • since October 4th
  • no monthly allowance
  • have spent about $80 (3 jewelry pieces, one pair of shoes)
  • NO clothes and NO bags allowed!!
  • I plan to go through the end of the year

Part of the reason that I've been so good is that I'm not having many fashion cravings. I don't have any room to put anything either.

My Shopping Ban:

  • Since 10/14 - last purchase was Bari Jay Lace Dress from parent's 25th, which I'm really dissapointed and want to take it back to Nordies, but I'm afraid....by then end of the reception dinner, the bottom hem of the lace was threading apart

  • Until 12/31/06 ... however, I'm trying to convince DH here and there to buy me stuff w/his $, which I'll post when it's fashion related.

  • Reason: Buying a house next summer

  • Shopping Allowed: Only X-mas presents and stuff I truly need.

  • Inspiration:  I'm trying to get back into my size 2s, I dont want to feel bad and buy a bigger size and when I lose the weight, I dont want to feel like I wasted the $ on the bigger size.  Oh yeah! and being a homeowner of course.

I NEED to be on a shopping ban and I definitely need the support to do it! I am sick to my stomach at sheer amount of stuff I bought this last year, I don't even have room in the closet for a third of it.

On the up side,  I didn't use credit and I'm happier with my wardrobe than I've ever been but it seems like there is always just "one more" thing I "absolutely" have to have. I haven't been doing B & M as much as online and it's like I always have to have something coming each week via UPS :(

I keep a notebook of all clothing related purchases and it's sprinkled with all these little notes saying different versions of "I HAVE GOT TO STOP SHOPPING! I did  resist the urge to hit the Nordies sale this morning but then I saw Sandy's black flat boots in the Shopping thread and thought "hmmm..." What's crazy about that is that I just sold a pair of really nice BR black flat boots on Ebay and I don't even ever end up wearing the two pairs of black boots I still have but I still checked around for the boots on the site. What is wrong with me???? *Sigh*

Shopping ban...count me in and I could definitely use some tips.

New mini-ban, only for the next 2 weeks. We are clearing all the payments we made on the credit cards, then I get to have a little fun. I decided against the more expensive coach bag for a cheaper one. In the meantime I'm imagining the pieces I really want and the outfits I'll make with them.

D, I'll be sure to post when I do my damage.

I am on a shopping ban!! I am trying to pay off all my credit card debt asap!! It is so hard though!! I am constantly online shopping and have a full shopping cart on every site just waiting to be purchased! I need some real will power! The only things i am letting myself buy is xmas gifts and a dress for a coworkers wedding.

My Rules:

  • No purses, No shoes, No clothes I can still buy accessories (mostly scarves and jewelry).

  • I give myself $60 a week and that's for every non-essential (eating out, movies, cds/dvds, books, jewelry, beauty stuff) and if I have left over cash at the end of the week i'll put it towards that weeks groceries, rather than rolling it over to the next weeks spending money.

However:

  • I can use Target gift cards from my cc company to purchase clothes and shoes

  • I can shop at thrift/S. Army type places, which I rarely ever do

  • I have to pay cash for everything that I buy

  • I can use gap/br/on coupons, but not for purchases that are that much above the value of the coupon. ex. If i have a $15 coupon I wont buy anything over $20, thus I won't spend more than $5 of my own money

Prior to two weeks ago when I cheated and bought two cord skirts at the Gap for $9.99 each, the last time I bought something that wasn't within my rules was Aug. 1st (and that was before I created my rules). I hope to stay on the ban at least until Jan. sales.

I haven't bought anything since

I'm shopping, but on a tight budget.  I'm revamping my wardrobe so I have to shop -- right?

But we're also saving for a new house (next Spring) and I can't go in too deep.  So I've set a limit of $100 a month unless it is a long term piece and then to keep my self in check I'm discussing it with hubby.  He's so reality based at times!

However, now for my confession -- I spent more thant my $100 already this month and it has just started good.

I'm trying to pay off my "discretionary" fund before my forever mortgage kicks in.  We are currenly in construction, so I'm curbing myself until our home is finished.  I also want to save some $$ for new home stuff    I haven't given myself a budget and don't really intend to.  I'm thinking I'd spend it if I 'thought' I had it.

I'm giving myself my usual thrift store, but only 1 or 2 times a month. I'm going to purchase, hopefully, a pair of low heeled boots for this winter and a few accessories.  Other than that I'm just not going to go shopping and hope that works out for me.  I really need to list some stuff on ebay - I may give myself the proceeds - I haven't decided yet.

Gifts will not be counted in my ban.

I'm on the ban... doing well!  I returned some shoes I bought on a whim.  I bought a bag, but my FH is paying for it as a birthday present (next week!!).

Right now I have an expensive wedding looming in front of me, so I haven't really felt the urge to shop.

I need to put myself on a dining ban, though - I'm still spending far too much in that area

I'm with squishy. Trying not to buy impulse buys, which has never quite worked out for me, but I'm trying. The only things I am allowed to buy are the essentials, and Christmas presents... Except for next weekend! My friends are coming to visit me, and we always go to the mall of america.
