I am usually a straight wine drinker...but I need a new drink - you know, when you go to dinner & sit down & we are going to order a bottle of wine but need to decide what everyone's eating, etc - what can I have first? I want something yummy but not too trendy - I feel like a cosmo is overdone & well, too strong if I'm going to drink all night. I tried the mojito & I don't like it - I do like vodka & I can do gin if it's good gin but it does tend to make me wild. No tequilla - nothing fruity. I'm open to suggestions though. Ideas? What is your "go to" drink?

lately i've been a fan of any drink containing pomengranate (sp?) liquor. a sushi place in town makes strawberry infused saki and mixes it with the pomengranate served in a martini (saketini) glass! yum yum!
I love pineapple martinis but not every place does them. Red bull and Vodka is one of my go to drinks. I really need a new mixed drink too.
One of my friends mixes hypnotic and henessey and I tried that once - took a sip and got something else (wedding free bar). I don't really recommend it but throwing it out there.
I'm a big fan of the vodka drinks. Vodka and cranberry is good but I tend to drink them too fast (white cranberry juice is the best! but it's hardly ever made at bars). I also like vodka tonics and vodka gimlets (lemony vodka drink - very tasty).
You could always order a single glass of wine, whatever kind you feel like, while you're waiting. I do that a lot also b/c I don't like to mix my liquors.
One more to add: one of my good friends and I always drink whiskey and diet cokes. It's only 2 points but I'm not sure a) it's for everyone and b) how it would make for a before dinner drink. It might be more of an after dinner type thing.
I like citron and sprite for vodka drinks. it's clear if you spill (i'm clumsy), i never have a bad night on it, and it doesn't dehydrate you or leave a taste in your mouth the next morning. rum and diet cokes leave a funny taste in my mouth the next day. they're too sweet. also, citron and sprite won't compete with the wine's favor as much as coke or sugary drinks.
when i want to be classy yet not have to have a bunch of drinks to feel buzzed (sometimes that's my objective ) i drink bombay sapphire martinis (up, dry, with olives).

If you get on webtender.com you can search drinks by ingredients (and do a lot of other cool stuff) but maybe you could discover a fun drink that way.
I like a 7 & 7 from time to time, a Tangaray and tonic, screwdriver and fuzzy navel, vodka pineapple and cranberry, margarita with a splash of Chambord, or some Sangria.
Gin & tonic Tequila & tonic Pink Gin (gin w/ bitters in a martini glass) Vodka & cranberry Beer
Also, have you tried good tequila? The difference between good tequila and Jose Cuervo is like the difference between Franzia and a good bottle of your favorite wine or Bud Light versus a great microbrew. It's like night and day. Good tequila is smooth and sip-able and totally drinkable on its own, like brandy. And it probably won't give you a hangover. Anyway, that's my pitch for tequila. If you just don't like it, then you don't like it, but the good stuff might be worth a try. I love it w/ tonic.
Another vote for vodka tonic. It doesn't color your mouth, it doesn't stain if it falls, it doesn't catch up with you very quickly, it doesn't have party-hearty or sorority-girl conotations, it won't fool the bartender and it won't give you a hangover.

I like gin usually, but if I order vodka, I like vodka and cranberry juice or vodka and grapefruit juice. I loooooove martinis with Citadelle or Bombay Sapphire gin. Apple martinis are good, but are apparently high in calories.
If you like sweet drinks, Toasted Almonds are the way to go!!!! So addictive!!! My ass isn't thanking me for the hundreds I gulped down years ago, though...

Yeah, I get mean- like physically wanting to kick ass on tequilla. My ex husband locked himself in a room to get away from me one night - and I totally don't do that. After 3 such really ugly episodes on tequilla I stay away completely. It's a also a marriage promise w/ DH I wish I could drink it because I love a margarita!
These are all so great - I may have to try different stuff until something sticks.

i usually get a kir when i go out. it's white wine and creme de cassis (black currant liquer), but most bars usually make it as chambourd and white wine. it's not super strong...depending on how it's made.
