favorite household items?
Permalink Closed

i don't normally shop for household items (cookware, cleaning items, etc.)  i went to Macy's to look around to see what was out there for when we go to register....  i was completely overwhelmed!

what are some of your favorite items around the house?

what are some things you thought you just had to have and never used?

what are some things you never wanted and now use all the time?

Some things I never thought would matter to me that much but I love:

* 4-slot nice toaster, use this all the time

* nice, fluffy towels

* Pyrex 9x13 pan with lid and carrier that keeps it hot/cold

Things I never use:

* blender

* bread maker or any of those other useless kitchen applicances (I've donated most of them to Goodwill) with exception of the Foreman grill

Things I wish I had/plan on getting:

* Kitchen Aid mixer (I love to bake)

* Nice knife set

My favorite things are our KitchenAid mixer, my 8" chef's knife, and my cast iron pan.

We don't use the KitchenAid every day, but it's a fantastic appliance.  It's great at everything.

DH helped me pick out a good chef's knife and it's the best thing ever.  If you take the time to get a good one that's balanced in your hand and feels good to you, it'll make chopping a gazillion times easier.

And cast iron is really where it's at in my opinion for pans.  It browns things so beautifully and once they're well seasoned, they're practically as non-stick as Teflon.

Thumbs up!

Kitchen Aid Mixer

Cuisenart Food Processor

Good Knives & cutting board

Big Colander

Thumbs down :(

I have nice Calphalon cookware, and it's hand wash. I would LOVE to go back to cheap stuff, toss it in the dishwasher, and replace it as needed.

Any single use appliance (bread maker, waffle maker, quesadilla maker)

I am a huge kitchen utensil dork:

demitasse spoons in my sterling pattern (they are so small and cute...it doesn't matter that I rarely drink out of my demitasse cups)

my kitchen aide.  it is so fun to make things with it!

my ice cream maker.  it's sort of a pain, but it's really neat to use...and the ice cream does taste really good.

my cuisenart.  I haven't used it yet, but I think it will be super.

mezzaluna chopping blades (like nigella uses).  so fun and it really chops things quickly!

A really nice set of pots and pans

Good knives

The new George Foreman grill with removable plates (you can put them in the dishwasher)

I really want a slow cooker, but I have decided that I am holding off until I get married to register for a really nice one

This may seem silly, but we have a milkshake maker (like they use at the store) and we love it.  The BF is seriously into milkshakes and this is way handier than a blender

Not silly to me!  We have one too, because my BF is totally into milkshakes too!  ITA w/you - it's way better than the blender.

The rest of mine are:

* Toaster Oven - this thing is so handy.  It's really nice when you want to reheat something that you want to be crispy.  It cooks way faster than the oven too.

* Nice bread knife - this thing cuts through everything!

* My Slow Cooker - best gift ever.  I'm amazed at all the things I can cook in it, and it's so nice to start something when I leave for work, and when I come home it's done!

* Tassimo Latte/Cappucino/Coffee/Hot Chocolate/Tea Maker -  we got this for our bdays last year and it's awesome.  It makes a single cup w/pods that you buy.  It's so great and has saved me lots of $$.

* George Foreman grill - really comes in handy when you're in a pinch and can't get outside to grill.

*Toaster oven.  I use it a lot more than I thought I would.  Very good when you just need to bake a snack so you don't have to heat up a big oven.

*Turbo cooker.  It's one of those as seen on tv things.  I use it all the time.  Very good for cooking food without the need to use oil for nice and moist food.  Makes the best cupcakes while cooking the cherry topping at the same time!

*I have one of those things that is similar to a food processor but just has the blades and you turn the handle yourself to chop.  Very nice and lightweight.

*Melamine mixing bowl set.  Lightweight, dishwasher safe!

Use a ton

Slow Cooker (especially in the Fall, we live on Stews, soups etc)

Good knife set and cutting board, both heavy wood one for veggies etc and plastic ones for meats. Never cut meats on a wood board.

La Creusset pot set

4 slot toaster, use this nearly every day

Kitchen Aid Mixer

Small things we like alot

Big and small collander

individual measuring cups

Spoon rest

mixing bowls with rubber bottom

locking tongs

Onion chopper ( it's great for chopping anything small )

Things we bought and never use

Bread Maker

Fondu Set

various  specialy serving dishes ( we use them once a year for big parties)

Love: KitchenAid Mixer, Chantal cookware, toaster oven, KitchenAid knives (chef, bread, and paring).

Dissapointed: Le Crueset stockpot (takes forever to boil water, FOREVER!), Oster blender ( I do use it a lot, but it doesn't chop ice well and when I use it for hummus or to puree soups I have to constantly stop it and scrap the bottom).

things we registered for or bought and love

Rowenta Iron-- best iron out there

Dyson Vacuum

Kitchen Aid

Dualit Toaster from Williams Sonoma

nice table linens from Williams Sonoma

nice towels and sheets

Crockpot

This is the best pie plate ever. I loved it so much that I bought a second. Actually anything from the Emile Henry line rocks.

Emile Henry Auberge Pie Dish, 9"

Riedel Wine Glasses

Pinot Noir, Champagne, Merlot and Chardonnay Glasses

We love them!!

Riedel Water Glasses

Henckels Professional Knives

Our china and silver-- we don't use it that much but I am glad we have it all

Asparagus Plate

Four crazy things we registered for and never use

Fondue Pot

and Williams Sonoma Fondue Plates

Artichokes steamer

A huge 15 gallon pot-- for lobsters or a huge stew---(i don't know what I was thinking or how many kids I thought we were going to have?)

Other than that, everything has been a good purchase!

Registering can be overwhelming and you can get carried away with the scanner but the good thing is everything can be returned or exchanged so just have fun.

I love my mini food chopper, but I would reccommend a regular-sized one if you have room for it

Toastmaster Mini Chopper - 1122

Others:

crock pot/slow cooker

smoothie maker (crushes ice better than the blender I used to own)

hot pot (boils water quicker than on the stove--perfect for hot cocoa or tea)

Toastess Blue and White Multi-Pot

I actually really liked my bread maker when I had one--I used it often because I used to eat sandwiches all the time.
