Skinny jeans. Leggings. Maternity tops. With round-toe flats. I don't want to be one of those people who can't change with the times... you know, like the old hippie who only wears the clothes that were in style when she was a teenager. But um, are they TRYING to make me look fricking HUGE? I can't stand it!
I haven't bought ANYTHING new this fall. Nothing. Because everything I try on makes my body look horrible. It's like they specifically designed the trends to take every flaw and emphasize it all to HELL. And I'm not even fat.
Is anyone else having this problem? Some of y'all (hello Fashion Princess) look adorable in the new looks. How did y'all DO IT? What are some things to look for with fit?
Help please! Because I clearly can't keep running around town in boot-cut jeans, pointy heels and flowered little camisoles much longer... It's like being in a 2004 time warp. Oh, and pictures would be WONDERFUL.
I feel your pain. I'm not thrilled w/lots of the looks and you do not have to embrace them. I am not doing leggings or the big maternity tops either. I have picked a few such as stripes. I'm pairing a striped long sleeve top w/a denim mini, black tights and stilettos. Basically, i'm taking advantage of this trend but making it more classic chic instead of a full out trend of a striped tunic w/leggings or skinny jeans and round toed flats.
I might cave in to skinny jeans trend but they would have to reasonably priced and look terrific on me and not make me look like a sausage coming out of its casing.
I have taken a few of my bootcut jeans which i always felt were a bit too flared and am having their legs tapered a bit so they are more straight.
So in conclusion, pick a small trend and shape it to fit you and stick to classics.
Dizzy, I suspect you have enough personal style (and personality!) to carry off any look you want...but if you don't think the new trends are flattering for you, then ignore them. It makes it harder to shop, because you really have to spend time looking for items that work for you, but it's worth it. And you know..."boot-cut jeans, pointy heels and flowered little camisoles" could just become your signature look. IMO that's rather classic and depsite what "new" fashions the media wants us to spend our money on, classic will never be out of style.
Don't despair!! When a season rolls around in which I can't seem to find anything "new" that flatters me, I buy less but buy timeless items instead. Invest in a new bag or boots or something, or maybe a nice cashmere sweater. You can still look great and not like part of the "herd mentality" (no offense to those who are enjoying the new looks!).

I know exactly what you mean. There's no way in hell I can pull of skinny jeans and/or leggings. It would be hideous. But I'm loving all the dresses and belts for the fall, so that will make up the bulk of my purchases. Luckily, for me, dresses are always good, so I don't care if they aren't next season's trends. I'll still wear them. Dress for you and you'll look better because you feel better.
Yeah, I'm not into leggings, maternity tops, or flats (of any kind), either. So I'm picking a few things I like: tights (not footless, thank you very much, since those are basically sheer leggings, IMO), round-toe pumps/platforms (some shoe trends I like this fall are suede, patent leather, and red), and some straighter leg jeans. Oh, and I like the fuller skirts, too, with a nice fitted top. And I'm buying a nice pair of boots and a couple of cashmere sweaters, like atlgirl says. As long as you pick one or two items you like to update your wardrobe, you'll be fine. I tend to go for the shoes, myself.

Thanks, but trust me, it takes some time to find things that work. I tried on a ton of skinny jeans before finding some I liked and I only like those tucked into boots. I don't think all of these trends are for everyone. One thing that got me to try leggings is for me to do brown and olive instead of black, which seemed so stark and 80's to me (although I may wear them now) and I also just thought of them as tights. But also there are other trends you can try, like what about waist belts, animal print, vests (sweater vest and menswear vest) and I also think jewelry is a great way to follow the trends with a classic wardrobe, like lockets and charm necklaces. I think JCrew does a good job of having a classic twist on trends:
Also, Anthro has some cute ensembles put together that could work for a lot of people and I think it's totally fine to do bootcut instead of skinnies:
I think the most important thing about clothes and fashion is that you are comfortable in what you're wearing. And I'm certain that you already look stylin'! HTH!
