Full disclosure: I love wrap dresses and wear them pretty consistently for work and going out. So, I get my money's worth. And, I love DVF. Everything about her aesthetic suits my lifestyle and my taste.
Here is the dilemma: the cashmere wrap dress. It is approximately $540.00. I adore it and have been "checking on it" for a couple of weeks. I live in LA. Is a black cashmere wrap dress worth it? I could wear it approximately 6 months out of the year and would likely wear it 2-3 times per month - sometimes weeks and sometimes weekends. This is not something that I wouldn't wear, but I am trying to figure out if it is worth devoting that many resources to a piece of clothing. For some reason, if it's not shoes or handbags, I have a hard time with big clothing purchases.
It's a total classic and it sounds like you'd get a lot of wear out of it and it'll last you for years to come. I say if you can swing it then go for it!
hmm that is a toughie. I've been contemplating when I will buy my first DVF wrap and I know the price shock/justification needed to shell out the money even though its classic and can be worn forever, etc. That said I don't know if this will be a more popular dress of hers that will sell out or if it would go on sale. For $540 I think I would hold out a little longer to see if it did go on sale. But if you think it will be like that black and white circle dress and sell out really fast now that fall is here I would probably just go ahead and spend the money. I think the cost per wear is very good so you would get your money's worth so to say.
I hate how you can never tell what will be hot and sell out and what will get over looked and hit clearance. So frustrating.
I think that it is GORGEOUS and perfect. However, $540 is a bit steep. You might want to wait to see if it goes on sale. Granted, as stated before, I am sure that the cost per wear will be pretty low in a very short while. I am torn, but I think that I would wait a little while to see if you can get it for less.
Like FP said, if you can swing it, then I'd get it. I personally would not wait for it to go on sale. A DVF wrap dress this classic and perfect will probably sell out in many sizes before (and IF) it goes on sale. That being said, keep in mind I'm one of those people who always gets really anxious that something I love will sell out, and I don't like to gamble in terms of waiting for sales and hoping it'll still be there.

ITA. If you can afford it, go for it You'll have it for years.
$540 is kinda steep but if it fits well, it's worth it. cashmere can be tricky in terms of fit because sometimes it hugs curves perfectly and other times it just looks kind of lumpy.
have you tried it on yet? if so, how did you feel? did you fall in love w/ yourself in it? or were you fidgeting, deliberating, or trying to make it work because you liked it in theory? like, were you more into the dress because it's DVF and cashmere or because you truly thought it was stunning on you? at that price, it should be your go-to-feel-good-the-minute-you-put-it-on dress. if it's not all those things, pass.
ETA: if this particular dress doesn't work out, you can always buy a bolt of cashmere from the garment district here in downtown LA and have a dress made to your specific measurements.
I definitely need to try it on. It's only online at Nordstrom right now, so I have to trek over there to try it out, or just order it from their website and see. And I love Esquiress' idea of having one made on my own if this doesn't work out! Thanks for all your help!
If nordies is a ways away for you just get online real fast and ask the customer service rep if your store even has it. I have been finding lately that everything I like on their website is a website exclusive and not available in stores. It might save you a trip.
