my madame X dress... need advice!
Permalink Closed

This is my Madame X dress. Any fellow art history nerds will recognize the painting. :) It's the most elegant and flattering piece of clothing I own. I'm going to wear it to my friend's wedding reception in France in two weeks, but I need ideas for accessories. The shoes I have (some of you will recognize them from the Magnolia sale), but I need a bag and I desperately need jewelry. The neckline is stark, but I'm not sure whether to go with a bold necklace or bold earrings. And also, while I'm asking for advice, what should I do with my hair? I look better with my hair down, but I feel like for a formal party and such a striking dress, I should maybe put it up. Thoughts?

John Singer Sargent, Madame X (Madame Pierre Gautreau, 1884, oil on canvas, 234.95 x 109.86 cm, Manhattan: Metropolitan Museum of Art.

ETA: I just spotted these on girlshop. I love tiger's eye, and I think the bronzey color of these pieces is an interesting and unexpected contrast to the black. And they're not expensive!

I think the earrings, if anything.  A dress cut that gorgeously doesn't need much decoration.  I'd probably just wear diamond studs, lots of black mascara, and a burgundy lip stain.

I'd do either the necklace or the earrings. I am leaning toward the necklace, b/c it could be really versatile later on. Maybe you could find a cool black/gold brocade clutch on ebay? I vote hair up (but loose) like the painting.

First that dress is gorgeous and looks perfect on you.  I wouldn't add too much to it.  I've been reading in some of the fashion mags that larger simple hoop earings are making a comeback and challenging the chandelier.  I think just the earings and maybe a bracelet but I wouldn't wear anything to detract from that gorgeous neckline.

As to hair, the style seems to be loose soft waves so if you are more comfortable with it down, then wear it that way.  You will look stunning in that dress.

I would just do earrings.  And hair in a loose, wavy chignon.  The dress looks perfect on you!

I'd either go with a delicate gold bracelet or an elegant gold cuff

I would just do earrings.  I love the ones you picked out.  I just think it's really refreshing to see someone in a beautiful dress with their neckline uninterrupted by a necklace.  Your skin is gorgeous, so I'd just dust some really subtle highlighting powder on your collarbone and wear those showstopper earrings and I think you'd be set.

I like FP's idea of a loose, wavy chignon.  It would be very "undone-chic."

The dress looks absolutely gorgeous on you! I think the earrings would look lovely. A striking neckline like that looks better without a necklace.

I love that painting (I believe it's in the national gallery?) and have always wanted a madame x dress myself! I agree with the others to keep it simple - just as she is.  I would wear my hair up, if I were you.  keep your bangs down - maybe an audrey hepburn look... strong upper lid only liner and well groomed and defined brows with possibly red lips? simple drama

no necklace!! I'd do just a simple earring and dramatic makeup. The dress is amazing- let it speak for itself.

I agree with the others just earrings.  I love Ncshopper idea of using dusting powder on your skin. When I opened this post the first pic that showed up was the one with your back view. I said HOLY CRAP look at those curves and that  beautiful back. You look stunning and the dress was made for you

Beautiful! I too agree with the majority.  Earings only.  Loose sexy chignon.

First, I have to tell you how gorgeous you look in the dress.

I agree with the majority: only earrings. I'd choose diamond studs, as it has been suggested. Hair, I'd so something like the painiting, or a bit looser. And for the make up, I'd do very very dark eyes, and nude lips. I can't wear red or dark lipstick, but if you can, you can also go the otehr way around: only mascara on the eyes and dramatic lips.

Now for the accessories. I'd use a black satin clutch. And I am pretty sure I'd buy a pair of long gloves (to mid -biceps, don't know how to explain better) - or may be a bit shorter, to the elbow - whatever feels more confy. And those should be black satin too.

I am sure you'll be one of the chicest in the wedding - again you look awesome in that dress

I think the dress and shoes are perfect.  I like the idea of drop earrings.  I could also see this looking very chic with little drop pearl earrings...keeping the art history theme going...a la Vermeer :).  I could also see diamond studs if you wanted go go with a bag that has a little more "pop."

As for the hair, I think it would look nice up or down.  I was just at a wedding where one of the guest had the most perfectly straight and shiny blow out ever.  She was wearing satin, and we all noticed the nice combination of shiny dress and sleek shiny hair.

Makeup...I would go for a very clean, matte red lip...with a touch of black liner and shimmery champagne eyeshadow...or, are you going to be self-tanning before the party?

Have fun!  It looks great!
