I've suddenly started noticing that term applied to handbags and I have no idea what it means... help?

I think it refers to the shape, more of a satchel.  I have the Marc Jacobs Tere, and it is large and square shaped.  The east/west bag from the same line is lower in height but I think just as long.

Yeah, it just means that the bag is oriented horizontally as opposed to vertically.


Like this:

As opposed to this:
