Wardrobe Weaknesses?
Permalink Closed

In cleaning my closet this weekend, I noticed that I have hardly any printed tops.  Like I have one that I can wear to work that is not a striped button-down.  So, I'm trying to balance out my wardrobe by focusing on adding to my collection over the next few months.

It got me to thinking...what have you found missing in your wardrobe, and how did you go about fixing it?  Or, if you don't have holes, how do you avoid buying to your strengths constantly?  I love cashmere and could probably clothe everyone in my complex with my sweaters...but I have literally 2 printed tops that aren't striped button-downs and only one of those is appropriate for the office.

I'd appreciate your suggestions for cultivating balance in my clothing

my weakness is totally the same as yours. I have almost no printed tops, or button-down blouses. I have very few skirts and dresses. I have TONS of tees in solid colors, all sorts of knit materials and shapes. I also have many pairs of slouchy trouser pants and oodles of black shoes in all sorts of styles.

My little sister styled me and she says that for the next few months, aside from a few more sweaters in the winter (which I really need), I am only allowed to buy printed tops, skirts, dresses and colored shoes. So far so good.

I have to many boring casual clothes. That is b/c my work is very casual. I have lots of camis and like Halleybird alot of  different colored tees. I'm trying to buy intersting peices such as printed shirts, more dresses and skirts and some tweed or plaid trousers. Of course this may take me a while since I'm on a budget

Oh and I bought a few belts to wear over my shirts. This is something different for me b/c I never thought I looked right in them.

I don't really have any holes in my closet. I think it's because as soon as I realize that I do have a hole, that's what prompts me to shop in the first place and so when I go out, my hole is all I can think of, so it's all I really look at. I actually rarely just get the urge to go shopping in general, it usually all starts when I realize I need something. Of course, I have pretty simple wardrobe needs right now - I still have a year left of school, and I usually work from home. When I do go into the office, it's super casual, so I just wear jeans and a tshirt there. I anticipate having huge gaping holes when I graduate and get a better job. This summer I had a job as a marketing assitant in an office, and I definitely had gaps galore in my office-appropriate wear, but I was only there for the summer so I didn't spend too much money or time caring about it

basics! I knows- it's rediculous! I literally have like 4 solid color tops. What? Yeah, I should probably do something about that.... its so easy to get tired of your closet when nothing can be mixed/matched!

I have many a shoe gap for sure, only one pair of black close toed heels, no red shoes, not many colored shoes at that.  I also don't have a lot of casual weekend wear, most of the stuff I buy is for work so I end up wearing pretty much the same 2 outfits every weekend.

My gap is the same as yours, kittenheels.  I have only one or two printed tops.

I have beaters, tank tops, and vneck tees in every solid color imaginable.  I don't know why, but I have a hard time spending money on printed tops.  It is silly.  I have no problem spending $150 - $200 on a skirt, but most of my tops cost less than $30.

I'm really trying to focus on this problem this fall.  On my list I keep of items I want to buy, I literally wrote "NO SKIRTS OR PANTS!!"  I need to remind myself that I my shopping budget should be going toward tops and accessories right now.

Handbags. I just recently started buying some nicer staple bags - but prior to that I had virtually zero handbags.

Basic tops. I don't have enough of these or any ones I really like. I just need more basic sweaters, shirts, button downs, etc.

I desparately need tops with structure and prints!  The vast majority of my tops are solid, tanks, or plain fitted tshirts.  So I resolved to not buy any more plain tops this season.  I'll make an exception for tank tops, but other than that, I'm on the lookout for new cute non-plain tops.

i think my wardrobe in general is too juvenile... not necessarily in a bad sense, but very college-y. i tried to break out of it, but just ended up with one-too-many button downs.

I don't really have any holes, I don't think, but I do have some problems, which sort of answers the question. For one thing, I tend to be drawn to the same colors and textures over and over again but somehow my brain doesn't retain memory of that fact. So I do wind up with things that are more redundant than necessary. Also, and I think most people do this, I sometimes buy a strong piece without really thinking about what it's going to work with; especially if it's a really beautiful fabric or print. Which can be good, because I have a few really distinctive and beautiful things that get compliments every time I wear them, but on the other hand, they only work with maybe one other piece in my wardrobe so I just wind up wearing the same outfit over and over. My color choices are all over the place; I have really saturated colors and really muted colors, which means that only half my wardrobe goes with itself at any given time.

Prints are tough in general, I think, cause if you pick out one color from the print to coordinate with, then it can look too matchy-- but then if you stray too far away from the print's colors it just looks wrong.

i have a ton of printed going out tops (which are easily remembered so i don't tend to wear them alot anymore) and not enough long sleeve basics or pants.  skirts... i bought a ton about two-three years ago, and here, i don't wear them as much, so i don't really need a lot of those.  casual dresses are also a hole for me.  costume/fashion jewelry has been a big focus for me this year so that's being taken care of.

l/s layering tees - I have about 9,000 beaters/camis but nothing with sleeves.

sweaters - I have a buch of cardis but no actual sweaters

pants - I used to have a pant thing but then I threw them all out in a closet overhaul. So now I have none.

Go-to items that aren't beaters and skirts. That's practically my only look. I'd like some things that are a little more vintage and distinct - some vintage dresses for instance - to be my go-to items. I'm working on it though because I bought an amazing dress in NYC when I was there. Now I just have to find a slip to go under it.

Cardigans- I always need these- especially long slouchy ones or shorter shrug ones, lightweight and heavy for winter.  I havent really filled this need too much because i'm a huge sweater snob =/

jewelry- i have all these ideas of jewelry i want to make-so i havent been buying any.  so i only wear maybe 5 necklaces- i am always wishing i had more.

bags- especially night- i am super picky- i don't want to spend a ton on a bag- but its hard for me to find bags i really like in the middle price range- usually there are too many details on them

jeans- i need more, its hard for me to find any

basically my holes still exist because i own too many clothes but not enough of what i want to wear.  but i feel too guilty to purchase, because i already have so much.  i need to go through my stuff asap, and use the ebay money to make some replacements.

I'm a sucker for jackets, cardigans, and blazers.  Probably because I get cold easily so these items appeal to me more than anything!  My problem is I don't have as many shirts and tees to go under these things!

My weakness is belts. It's the one accessory that I wish I had more of. I hate wearing belts, but I've come across a few that I love and I am also loving the new looks where they go around your waist on something like an peasant top. Obi belts make me look swallowed up by them (I'm short) and I hate anything with a huge buckle. So...my advice to myself has been that if I find a belt that I love, buy it immediately, because I rarely come across these.

I also lack printed tops, fall shirts and accessories in general, but by far my biggest hole is:

No normal nice black pants!!!! This is at the top of my "must buy" list for the fall and I'm keeping an eye out for a sale on those Martin pants at Banana Republic. But until I get them, I will continue to not have this basic.

I feel like my whole wardrobe is a big weakness right now.

I'm with a lot of you that don't have enough printed tops.  I have like maybe two.  I have so many tees and casual shirts, but not a lot that can be layered to create different looks.  I think I need to concentrate on fixing that because I feel so damn frustrated every time I walk into my closet.

I also don't really have enough pants and winter skirts.  Or accessories.  I have enough shoes right now, I think, but bags and belts are a problem.  I'd also like more dresses.

I'm a mess.

I have a big hole where accesories should be- earrings, necklaces, etc... its hard to find something that I both like and will actually wear. I will buy something thinking I love it- and it will sit in my jewery box, or I will put it on and then end up taking it off before I walk out the door. I just feel like jewery is too much for me- but it probably is that Im not too good at putting it together with my outfits. To me it really takes an artistic touch to add just the right pieces, and it not only complement, but enhance an outfit. I have a ton of trendy styled jewlry in my jewelry box- and 50% of it has never been worn. I also have a need for a great pair of black pants- I tried a pair of the new style ones at Express- now the name is totally escaping me- and I loved the fit. I am stalking for a sale, because I have another month until I really need them. The one other item\items I need are intresting sweaters. I have basic, one color, long sleeved and short sleeved v-necks and crews. But, have only a couple with detailing, pattern, or something that makes it special. Anthropology has a few that I like, but really a bit out of my price range.
