Need outfit help! Evening BBQ
Permalink Closed

Girls, I need some inspiration.  In 2 weeks hubby and I are going to a BBQ at his bosses bosses house.  My hubby just got a great new job at work (we're military, so technically it's not a promotion, but it really is).  Anyway, the BBQ is at the Colonel's house w/ a bunch of high ranking officers there.  My husband is the youngest person ever at his job, so I'm sure we will be the youngest couple, and we'll stand out a little bit being that we're younger , so I'm a little nervous.  There's a little bit of buzz around the base about my hubby since he got this awesome job way earlier in his career than most, so I know we'll be "checked out".  ARGH!

SOOO, I need something appropriate for a BBQ, but it IS a Saturday night at the bosses house, so I want to look nice.  Also- I live in Phoenix, so it will be HOT.

Thanks girls.  Any ideas/advice appreciated!

What about a cute little sundress, or is that too dressy?

Oh, and congrats to the hubby on the new job!

i'm totally thinking a dress, too.  maybe something that goes to mid-calf and skims your figure but doesn't hug it.  and for the material maybe a nice jersey, or is that too casual?  eyelet, maybe?  or is that too fussy?  and maybe a a cute cardi or shrug over your shoulders?  let me see what i can find...

ETA:

ooh, how about something like this?  it's catherine melandrino and @ $475, i think it's totally overpriced, but do you like the look?

oh my gosh, how cute is this one?  from l.a.m.b., gwen stefani's line--

Oh, yeah, I LOVE the dress.  It's gorgeous.  Couldn't do the long sleeves right now, but I love the style and I think the empire waist would be flattering with my more than ample bosom .  The color would not look good on me.  It would totally wash me out, but I'd love to see anything similar in a different color.  And probably closer to $100.

Guess I'll add some info for those of you who don't know what I look like...  I'm 5'10, size 12 usually, fair (little bit of a tan right now) and blonde.

Could you just call the CO's wife or one of the other officers' wives that has been to similar events and ask what would be appropriate?  I'd be concerned about showing up in a dress for an outdoor BBQ in case the other wives are wearing pants or shorts.  It wouldn't help your cause to alienate the other wives by being over-dressed but it would be equally uncomfortable to be underdressed.

got it.  empire waist, no long sleeves, more color and closer to $100.  do you have a particular color you like? like a go-to color?  oh and cheryl b makes a good point about not being too overdressed but i figure if we could find you a dress in a casual material, that maybe that would be a good compromise?

oh and i wish i could go back in time to the rachel pally sample sale that lilykind, crystal and i went to a couple of weeks ago.  all the dresses were all in these pretty, pretty colors like green and peach and rose and watermelon, in this awesome jersey material that was super-flattering and they were all like seventy bucks.  sigh, c'est la vie, i guess.   let's keep looking...

Yes, I'll call the CO's wife.  Everyone here dresses so casually, that I'm often over-dressed, but that's fine.  I know a few of the wives that will be there that dress up for everything, so I think I'll be okay.  Thanks!  Oh- and it's at their house (along w/ the backyard), btw.

And FashionPrincess... thanks for the congrats!

Si senorita!  I love Rachel Pally dresses... sounds perfect.  Are you sure you don't have a time machine?  Colors... Pink, aqua, blue, green, red, etc.  I tend to wear brighter color next to my face.

And, while stunning, the red might be a little much!

Thanks for all the help girls!

Here's some suggestions:

Ella Moss Cap Sleeve Dress

and I'd do some wedges/espadrilles.

I have this dress in a lighter blue and I wear it all the time.  I've worn it to weddings and barbeques, just changed accessories for the occasion.  It's pretty, comfy, and flattering.  I do have to wear a cami underneath for modesty's sake though.  I also think it will transition well into fall.

lane dresslane dress$118 at anthro.

I would wear a cotton casual sundress or a cute top and skirt combo with some wedges or metallic thong sandals. I would be wary of wearing anything too sexy since this at your bosses house. Congrats on the promotion!

sidecar dress

This is a more modest Rachel Pally on sale for $74.95 at Anthro. The color is a deeper jade-green IRL...it's the same color as my green RP dress if you look in my most recent TS. It looks better if you're less hippy.
