What happens if it's time to take your BCP, and you're in public? [32 vote(s)]

I always run off to a corner or to the bathroom to take my birth control in private. I don't want the public to know I'm on it.

You're supposed to take birth control pills at the same time every day. Of course, sometimes that could be in the middle of shopping or dinner or while you're at work. If you're in public when it's time to take your BCP, do you hide it? Do you just pull it out of your purse and take it in plain view, or do you try to find a corner and take it discreetly?

I just try to time it to a time I know that I'm usually home.  Right now its somewhere between 10 and 11 pm since I am home most nights at that time.  I know others do it around 7 am as that is when they are sure to be home.  I try not to take medicines in public as I don't want people looking at me strangely as if I had a drug problem or something you know.

When I was on BCP, I took it right before going to bed (between 11PM and 1AM) when I was sure to be home. However, I'm sure that people in Los Angeles have seen people do far worse things than pop a BCP in the restroom. In the event that I would have to take it in public, I would be discreet, but I certainly wouldn't be ashamed.


I also say politically incorrect, blunt, opinionated things to and around people in public at the most inopportune times, so I may not be the person to ask.

I am usually not in this situation, but I have no qualms about popping them out & taking it in public, in front of my parents, or my DH's. I don't think it's any big secret that we aren't trying to get pregnant & I don't think it would shock a soul that we are having sex. But I felt that way when I was younger & not in a serious relationship too - I don't see the big deal.

I do try to be discreet around my nieces because one of them saw me & asked me what it was. I told her vitamins.

99% of the time I'm already at home.If not then I ususally just wait cause I don't want to carry them around (no particular reason why I would not- just have enough junk in my person).


I use to be anal about when I take them when I was 18 and first started.But I've found that there no consequences of not taking them at the exact same time every day( for me at least, none of my friends either). As far as pulling them out in public I wouldn't be embarassed, but I don't think it's a good look- whipping out the pack and stuff. Kinda like my great grandmother wouldn't want me giving her, her insulin in public.She knows she not the only diabetic in the world but she'd rather take care of it at home.


Oh and if I'm doing an over nite or something at work and won't be home, sometimes I'll take the pill out and put it in the change part of my wallet (I never put change in there).

I take mine around 7am, so I'm usually home at that time.  In public, I'd probably be discreet but not hide it.

It depends on my company. If I'm at my inlaws, I try to be sneaky. If I'm out with friends or my sis, I just whip them out. I don't think my in laws would care, or my folks for that matter, but it feels inappropriate to bust out a pack and blatently take doin' it pills.

Doin' it pills!  Ha!  I love it!


Sometimes taking them openly starts a conversation I don't necessarily want to have (about kids, whatever) so I alwasy try to be discreet no matter who I'm with.  I try to take mine within an hour or so of the same time every evening.  If I'm going to be a little later than that on a Saturday night or something, I just take it when I get home.  If I'm going to be out late or I know I'm going to be out more than one night in a row, I'll toss them in my purse and take it while I'm out (in the car, bathroom, whatever).


Basically I don't mind if people *know* I'm on them, but I don't really want to broadcast it, talk about it, etc.

Now that I'm married and totally suburban and go to bed regularly before 11, I just take it at home.  If I happen to be out, I don't have a problem taking it.  Most of the time I try to be at least somewhat discreet, but in college I may or may not have taken it at a bar and washed it down with Jack and Coke.  Classy.

haha - you may or may not be the only one guilty of such an indiscretion.


i normally take mine at home, but if for some reason i'm out and actually remembered to bring my pills with me, i'll take them in public.  like most of the others, i'll try to be discreet, depending on my company, but i'll take it.
