Find out the sex?
Permalink Closed

DH and I will be able to find out the sex of our baby on the next appt we go to. So we have to decide if we want to know- or if we want it to be a surprise. So just curious how many people found out (or would find out if it was them) and if you were happy with your decision.

With our first, it was a surprise.  It was very exciting, and I think everyone should do that once.  BUT, once was enough for me, and with our second child, I just HAD to find out!  Both were girls!

I think finding out during the u/s is just has exciting as finding out at the time of birth...just my personal opinion :)

but everyone is different!

I plan on finding out, assuming that I do get pregnant and the baby cooperates .  We plan on only having one, and I know I'm going to need some time to process whatever the sex is.  I don't prefer one over the other, but I'm still going to want to mourn not having the other, ya know?  I'd rather do that at 20 weeks and have another 20 weeks to make my peace instead of dealing with it when I'd rather be just enjoying getting to know my child.

Even though we want to find out, we're not going to tell anyone else until the baby is born .  Maybe that would be a doable compromise for you, too?

I mean, it's a suprise no matter when you find out, right?!

this is what friends of mine did and i think it's so nice. when the time comes for me, i plan on copying this idea.

they went to their appt and instead of having the doctor verbally tell them the sex, they had him write it down on a piece of paper and put it in an envelope. then the couple went to a nice dinner that night, and opened the envelope together.

so sweet.

i'd want to know just for planning purposes- ie buying clothes for the baby and decorating the room... wouldn't want everything to have to be yellow.

that is really sweet. i might have to copy too.   my mom never found out and really believes in that.  i "delivered" two babies the first one they found out and the second couple didn't find out.  i thought the couple who didn't find out wasn't really as excited as i thought they would be (the mom was a bit drugged so maybe that has something to do with it) so for that reason, and the fact that there's so much excitement that day anyway, i think i'll find out before hand.

I wanted to know so I could have the nursery done and some clothes already on hand. Chris did not want to show his little selfSo I went with Winnie the pooh theme just in case.

Like Elle, I only really want one.  So, I'd definitely want to find out so I could "make my peace".  Plus, I don't like surprises if it's something really important like the sex of a baby.

We're not finding out.  I think it's God's greatest surprise.  I want to actually have the little baby in my view when I find out what he or she is.  I just think it will be the greastest moment ever! I love green and the bedding is already bought and I wouldn't change it regardless of the sex.  I've bought lots of blue and pink things from the Gap.  There return policy will allow me to return/exchange the items I don't need after the baby comes.  I've also bought clothing in chocolate brown, khaki,  navy, and denim.  I think these will work with pink or blue.  My husband and I are excited to find out the sex but we know it'll be a lot more fun to find out once that little baby pops out!

Just a personal preference though!

Well said.  I don't want to find out before hand either.  I was talking with my bf about this topic the other day and his response was completely opposite of mine because his sister found out before and they all prepared for it but I said there was enough generic baby stuff that I didn't want the time to "prepare" according to sex and I'd rather wait until I had a baby to find out if it was a girl or a boy and he agreed so when the time comes I won't be finding out early.

we would find out.

i couldn't wait !!

they have been some Chinese baby boys given to families that requested adopted Chinese girls lately (about 6) and while I wouldn't be upset for long, we have been expected a baby girl for 19 months and are waiting on a girl. If it switches to a boy for us, I would grieve a little (b/c we are only having one as well) but would quickly adjust

I have three (all boys!) and the way I have always looked at it is that I like finding out beforehand because that just means I have two days of excitement during the pregnancy-one on the day I find out the sex and the other on the day I have the baby and I get to see him!  Plus, I am a huge bargain shopper and finding out the sex beforehand allows you to buy little by little along the way as you find deals.

Same here I had the nesting syndrome really bad with both of my babies so I wanted everything perfect and ready for their arrival

it's certainly a personal choice and everyone has their own opinion on this matter, but even if you do find out the sex ahead of time, meeting your baby face to face for the first time is STILL the greatest moment ever! right? it's still quite a suprise too. you have no idea what this little person looks like until that very moment.

obviously i found out ahead of time. i just HAD to know!
