Hair issues - not danduff but what?
Permalink Closed

I have been having the same problem nearly every single day - I have what looks like dandruff or something in my bangs / the front of my hair. It's not dandruff I'm assuming because it's not coming from my scalp, but when I pull back my hair it looks like hair spray build up that dried up & when I try to pull it out with my nails it gets worse & worse - does that make sense? I use practically NO product - maybe a little bit of gel or something while it's wet - I assumed that's what it was so I switched out what I was using & switched shampoo / conditioner. But after I blew my hair dry today it did it again! Help. I use all drug store brand type stuff & that is what I've switched between. I also tried washing my hair with my Philosophy 3in1. I don't know what else to do - is there something that will strip whatever this is on my hair off without spending a fortune or making a special trip to Sephora? I am going in for a cut hopefully on Saturday, but I really don't want to wait another day.

Hmmm that is odd!  Honestly, I'd try washing with liquid dish soap and then do a really deep conditioning, maybe with an at home hot oil treatment.  The dish soap should take care of any residue that's hanging on if that's what it is, and the oil should take care of any dryness if that's what it is.

clairol herbal essence makes a clarifying shampoo.  Maybe try it for a few days.  I get this too and usually I switch shampoos and that is enough for me.

you say you use drug store shampoos - do you mean 99 cent suave or the $10 stuff? The cheaper stuff leaves a residue - I used suave in high school until my junior year when I was getting my hair done up for prom and the hair lady freaked out and shined a light on my head because she thought I had lice, until she found out I just used crap on my hair. Maybe you need to change shampoos, or maybe you have lice? (yikes! I hope it's not that!)

My hair gets like this every once in awhile during the winter (dry scalp for me). I use Neutrogena's T-Gel and it clears up after one or two washes. A stylist recommended it ages ago and I always have a bottle on hand to use if I notice some dry flakes. I usually use it once or twice a winter.

I use I guess medium priced stuff - like Herbal Essence, Daily Defense, Garnier - that kind of thing - I have been known to use the 0.99 stuff in a pinch, but not lately And I hope to god it isn't lice - I can't imagine how I would get lice since I haven't been around children at all & to be honest I don't see that many people - the fact that it doesn't itch & that it is only in that one part of my hair makes me confident that isn't it.

I'll try some of the things ya'll suggest & mention it to my hair dresser. I'm just so embarassed

Does your scalp itch? There is a difference between dandruff and just plain dry skin/scalp. You can go here: http://www.headandshoulders.com/southeastasia/dandruff/qa.asp to read a pretty good explanation. I would also suggest picking up some tea tree oil from Whole Foods or any random hippie shop and washing with it, you should only need a small amount.

I found this also on some random website about medical terms:
What is the difference between dandruff and just dry skin? The main difference iare flakes from dandruff are medium to large in size. The flakes are usually white and oily in appearance. The flakes are believed to be caused by Malassezia, a naturally occurring fungus found on the scalp. Dry scalp on the other hand is not quite as noticeable and is characterized by smaller flakes, excessive itching and occurs when your scalp lacks its natural oils.

I've found that even stuff like Herbal Essence either builds up in my hair or gives me dry scalp and I get flakes. The only drugstore product that I don't have issues with is anything from John Frieda. It sounds like one of your products could be drying out your scalp. My scalp gets driest right at the front, along the hairline if I use a cheaper product, probably because that's where the product is concentrated the most.

i have the same problem and my hair dresser said to condition the hair near the scalp as well.. i used to always condition by the ends cos that's where it's the driest but she said the whole head needed conditioning as well... maybe try that and see if it works.

Thanks everyone for your recs. I didn't make it to the store but that night decided to start by leaving out parts of my routine to see if it made a difference. I put zero gel in it & that did it - it was fine. So that at least gets me to the hairdresser on Saturday when I can figure out if I have scalp issues - which I really don't think I do because I don't see a thing. Thanks again.
