Black Tote and Brown Suit?
Permalink Closed

I received a really nice black Coach tote as a graduation present and I'm looking forward to using it when I start my job this fall. But I was wondering whether it will clash with any of my brown suits. Do I need to get a brown tote also?

I personally wouldn't like a black tote with a brown suit, so I would get a brown bag if I were you.

It doesn't bug me, but I'm seriously extremely liberal when it comes to mixing brown and black - I never think it looks weird. Ithink I'm alone in this, though.

Depends on the shade of brown.  Chocolate brown no, lighter like cocoa or camel, then yes.

I think you can do it!

If you're wearing a brown suit with a black bag, then the bag needs some backup - a black blouse and black shoes.  Then the black looks intentional.

Example:

Albert Nipon Safari Pants Suitsilk lady blouse

Hobo International Double Ring Tote

Another option is to do a more eclectic feel altogether.  If you're using more than one color with your suit anyway, like a patterened/colorful top and a bright shoe, the black bag doesn't look so out of place.

Example:

Albert Nipon Safari Pants Suithillock scoopneck

rsvp StellaHobo International Double Ring Tote

-OR-

Albert Nipon Safari Pants Suit gerbera button-up

Type Z 6640Hobo International Double Ring Tote

Nah, you're not alone. I think black and brown work fine together, too.

I definitely think you can use the black bag with the brown suit

I agree with Elle's reasoning & there is always my black/brown combo fall back - leopard shoes or shirt or scarf/ belt.

I'm good with black and brown also, especially with Elle's suggestions. I really love the brown suit with black blouse and black shoes. Very cool.

I think the combo will be great together.

I hope my question doesn't come off hostile but why are people so opposed to black and brown together?

I love Elle's suggestions.  I'm normally not a fan of brown...but those pictures made me think how fun a brown suit would be this fall with lots of jade and burgundy accents

I'm not sure but I've always assumed it's one of those old rules, like the one that you should match your bag to your shoes.

I personally love black and brown together.

Thanks for all the help ladies, especially Elle-- your suggestions for different ways to wear my brown suits were really inspiring!

I actually think brown and black can look really sharp together but am always self-conscious about being a fashion faux pas. No more!

I think people are opposed to it because it has always been a rule, and it's been a rule because if it's done wrong, it can look like you got dressed in the dark.  That said, I actually love black and brown together, and if it's done intentionally, it can look really modern.  Go ahead and wear the tote!

Depends on the color of the tote. Camel, pale mocha work fine with black. However dark brown and black clash in my opinion. If you wouldnt wear shoes the same color as your bag with your suit, then I wouldnt carry the bag.

Just my 2 cents ...

I love brown with black and wear it often in the winter especially dark brown with black or camel and black. I'm with the other girls -- go for it.

Agreed. Same goes for navy and black, navy and brown, plum and brown, creme and white, etc, etc, etc. Color rules are boring. I'm all for breaking them!
