Are City shorts professional?
Permalink Closed

On wednesdays I work with a doctor side by side, I am just there basically to learn from him and the decisions he makes for his patients.  I feel like I have to dress conservative because its a health care setting and these patients lives are in our hands basically.

So is it inappropriate to wear city shorts, such as Black Express editors that hit right above the knee?  If it makes any difference i do wear a white lab coat as well.

They are so comfy and I love wearing them, but unsure if this setting would be appropriate.

I wouldn't - healthcare is generally SO conservative.  And I think anyone who is not as stylish as we are won't get that shorts can be dressed up.  But I am sure you look adorable in them!

I agree with ejc. I wear shorts to my office, but my office is casual. I think in the health field, things tend to be a little more buttoned up and shorts might be inappropriate.

i think they are professional looking but you'd be surprised alot of the "older" folk are shocked that we would wear shorts to work.

i'm work in an engineering field and they're pretty conservative too but my boss/dept is laid back so i get away with wearing them. i think with yr lab coat-- you'd look real cute w/ the shorts!

Sorry..I know they are really comfortable, especially when it's so hot out but I think it's not appropriate for two reasons:

1. It is a health care setting and I think that you  need to err on the professional side. Call me old-fashioned but I get a little skeeved by anybody in the medical/health care profession showing leg-skin. I would feel differently if you were wearing panty hose with the shorts, but dude, hose suck. I can't justify my reasoning on this, just that it bothers me.
2. You are a student (and I'm assuming) that this doctor can/will be a future job contact. Again, you need to err on the professional side for someone who might be giving you some sort of reference in the future. Even if you  never use this doctor as a reference, I feel that it's a good idea to always assume that the person you are working with can be contacted by a future job prospect.
