Business Professional With a Lab Coat...
Permalink Closed

So that's what I'm potentially looking at if I accept a job that I'm interviewing for.  During the first interview I wore a pants suit and that's what the lady interviewing me was wearing.  I have a second interview in which I'll probably wear a different suit with a skirt (and stockings ).

She also mentioned that I would have to wear close-toed shoes at all times.

This weekend since there's a lot of sales I was planning on doing some shopping and picking up some pieces if I see anything I like (I can always return them).  The only thing I can think of is to get a ton of DVF dresses, and matte jersey dresses (from BCBG and like stores) and to wear those.  I really hate "work" pants because I never wear them on the weekend.  It's important for me to be able to get pieces that I can wear and WANT to wear on the weekends and items that I like, even if they are more expensive and not just get things for the sake of getting work clothes.  I don't want to get "work" clothes I would rather get everyday clothes to an degree.

Also, I've had good luck in the past with Nine West shoes, any other somewhat comfortable high heels?

these were some that I was thinking about...

Thanks ladies, I'm not really down with the business attire in case you couldn't tell.

You know who always looks great?  (On television, that is.)  Is Addison from Grey's Anatomy.  See if you can find any shots of her to give you some ideas.  She always looks feminine and pretty, but business-like under her lab coat.  I'll try and find some pictures online when I get home from work today.

Here's some things I like, but I'm not sure I can make work.  Can someone tell me what's appropriate/not appropriate from my picks?  Also, I don't want to do button downs with plain pants, but be honest if that's what I have to do.

#1

with cardigan buttoned all the way up.

#2     #3

  (probably more covered up)

#4

more covered up with cardigan fully zipped, maybe a tight turtleneck underneath

#5

 with collared shirt

#6

the jacket, maybe with a shift dress

#7

 with collared shirt underneath

#8

 with tank underneath

#9

with tank underneath and maybe take in the sleeves.

I really like all the dresses and outfits you picked out..but my one question is about stockings. Where will you be working? Will you be actually doing labwork or is it more of a medical setting? Just not sure where the labcoat comes in. See, if you are supposed to be wearing closed toe shoes, I'm thinking that you should also be wearing stockings (which could become totally a pain in the butt) or pants. If it's a lab setting where you will be doing actual lab work then aren't dresses a no-no, just like the closed toe shoes? I'm just thinking that dresses might not be the best option here and you need to check out more pants stuff. I know it sucks to have to get "work-pants" that you might not wear anywhere else. I would just see how the second interview goes with wearing a skirt. Who knows, maybe skirts are okay.

ETA: So, wait...is this at the laser hair removal place? Perhaps then the no stockings with dresses is okay and then that completely negates my post. Either way...good luck and I love the dresses.

esquiress- thanks so much for your recommendations.  DVF is all that i can think of since i want something pretty sleek underneath.

relrel- you hit the nail on the head, it is for that job.  i was offered the job, but we still have to go through a couple of the specifics so i didn't formally accept yet.  i'm really excited because i just called them up and asked for a job and the whole process was pretty painless.  it will be at a Med Spa.  they do laser hair removal, botox, etc..  i'll be trained mostly to make sure there's always a sterile field, and in assisting the Dr. but i will possibly learn some other things as well, depending on how i split my hours up.  they want it to be less "medical procedure" and more spa treatment so that's where the dress code comes in.  they sounds pretty strict about it.  so there's no scrubs, and stocking are required for dresses (bleh, i hate stockings).  i know what you mean about pants, my bf said get pants too, but i really hate wearing/buying dress pants, even more than i hate stockings.  i have a couple, so if i'm spending $$ i'd rather it be on dresses/skirts, amazing pumps, etc...

one more thing i'm not sure of is fabric.  is cotton ok if you put a dressy blazer over it?

what are good brands for stockings?

anyone?  i have a couple things set up for next week and i have no clothes!  i should've used my BCBG discount for something other than going out clothes!!!

I really like #6, but it looks like it may be uncomfortable to wear under a lab coat.  I think #1 is too casual, mainly because it seems too short.  Something like #9, you would definately have to take in the sleeves because they will get all bunched up under a lab coat.

If you do decide to get some pants, I think Banana Republic has a lot of really nice business casual clothing, that is not too stuffy or boring, and it won't break the budget (why break the budget on something you don't really want, though it would be nice to have some pants, I think).

I am jealous because your lab coat will probably be all cute and fitted, whereas I have to wear these huge, disposable lab coats to work (I have my own cute lab coat, but I can't wear it to work).

Spanx everything always rocks. I also own Nordstrom's house brand...they tend to dissapear into the legs well.
