how to ask my doctor to switch treatment methods
Permalink Closed

I know this is really silly and the answer is "just ask him!" but I've never done this before and I'm not sure how to approach it. I started seeing an allergist a few months ago and after confirming that my allergies and asthma both need serious attention he wrote me SIX prescriptions and said that if they don't work we can try shots.

I have an appointment to check my breathing on Friday and I want to tell him that I would much rather get shots than to continue dealing with all these medications. The thing is that the prescriptions are working but at least one of them was making me so foggy and dry mouthed that I stopped taking it, it's really hard for me to remember to take all of them, esp. since some are 2x a day, and it's super super expensive - the shots would be covered by my insurance so I would just have to pay the copay for visits.

Should I just explain all my reasons and hope that he agrees to switch methods? I'm afraid he will discount my scatterbrained nature or cheapness or hatred of dry mouth but I really don't want to have to find another doctor.

Are most doctors pretty open to trying another method at the patient's request? I used to get shots when I was little so he wouldn't need to worry about my reaction to them.

Totally explain this to him. Most doctors only want to start a regimne that the patient can stck to, and it seems your having trouble with all the pills. I would think he would understand.

I agree.  Think of it from this angle: he's a doctor and as such, he presumably, should want to make you well and make you feel better.  If he's putting you on a routine that won't work for you in the long run, then he's not doing you any good and he's not doing his job.

I think if you let him know that you're feeling better in some regards, but taking 6 pills a day is too expensive and too much for you to remember, in addition to the dry mouth, then he should understand that.  If he discounts your feelings or is too stubborn to listen to you, then you have yourself a bad doc and you should find a new one anyway.  That's not to say he'll put you on shots right away, but at least he could try to get you down to a more simplified routine.

you could totally tell the truth and explain things to him as well as you explained them to us.

or you could just lie and say the pills don't work and you really think you need the shots.

i think he'll give you the shots, he offered them to begin w/ after all, it's not like you're asking for some new radical thing he's never heard of.

haha yeah my first instinct was to just claim that I don't think the pills are working that well but you guys are right, if he's a good doctor he should be willing to take these other factors into account and let me try the shots even though he had originally just mentioned them as a last resort.
