Asking for a raise.....
Permalink Closed

Oh boy…..this is the first time I have ever “thought’ about asking my boss to review the annual increase I just got.

Here’s the scenario, for the past 4 years I have been getting a 5% annual salary increase.

I just had my review early May and I had a STELLAR review. Seriously, it was by far the best review I have ever had. My overall grade was “Outstanding". (For comparison purposes, last year I received “Meets Requirements”.

I just received my increase letter from the H.R. department and I was surprised to see it was still only a 5% increase. I guess was expecting a slightly higher percentage increase giving how good of a year I had and how my review reflected that.

It makes me wonder if I hadn’t gone ‘above and beyond’ and still only received a “Meets Requirements” grade, would I have still only received a 5 % increase?

It just doesn’t seem right/fair. What’s my incentive, ya know?

Please help! I so don’t know how I would even broach this!?!? Should I? What’s the standard? Somebody help!

I think a 5% raise every year is quite generous, especially for when you have only met requirements previously.

I would go to HR and ask what company policy is in regard to percentage of raise in relation to performance score.

it may be that your boss has a certain budget and they allocated what they could to you. maybe 5% is the top raise you can get for a review and they've been giving it to you all along even though there were areas they wanted you to improve on in prior reviews.

anyway - find out if there is some type of guideline they use, if not, it may be time to put together a little presentation of what you have done for the company and why you feel your compensation should be increased to be commensurate to your contributions...

with the stellar review, maybe they're considering promoting you and a raise would automatically come with that?
