I am going to NYC in 2 weeks, and still trying to figure out a dress for the ballet I'm seeing while I'm there. I'm not sure how dressy people generally are, but I like to be on the slightly less dressy / more funky side when I go to the theatre, b/c I hate looking stuffy/conservative.
Thanks to Lilykind, I have half the Nordstrom SAs in the U.S. searching out this dress for me. My question: would it be appropriate, or is it too casual?
ETA: Muahahahahaha! They found me one!

I've only been to the ballet once but I can assure you that the dress is definitely appropriate. If anything, you'll probably be one of the best dressed people there.
I went to the opera recently and wore a knee-length silk dress with a pashmina. Compared to most people there, I was overdressed (but I really enjoy dressing up for occasions like that so it didn't make me uncomfortable).
You'll look fabulous in that dress! I really hope you'll find it!
I think the dress is appropriate. I've gone to the symphony pretty often (similar dress code) and I think you will probably be one of the best dressed there...in both NYC and LA I see people wearing jeans and I'm totally appalled!
I agree that the dress would be totally appropriate - the times I've gone it seemed that there were people who looked very nice, though not super fancy and then some others (tourists?) that wore jeans or black capris and t-shirts .
Definitely not too casual. Perfect, actually!
