I'm accepting the job!!!!
Permalink Closed

So I got a phone call today from the church (for the secretary position) and she said they wanted to offer me the position and also they wanted to meet with me tomorrow to discuss the details of the offer package.

Now, how exactly do I ask for some time to think it over formally? Do I say something like "Thank you so much for the offer and I'm definitely still interested in the position, but I'd like a few days to think over the details if that's okay"?

Reason I need to think it over, is that the base salary is fairly low and I'm not sure if I can financially do that. Otherwise, I do want this job and I think it would give me a lot of great experience for future Admin work

Can you just tell them that? It's actually a pretty good negotiating move, and since you're being sincere, they should be able to pick up on that and wont' think you're playing them. And it shouldn't matter to them if you have to wait a couple days, but it would be polite to ask if it would put them out in any way to have to wait for an answer... Good luck, and good for you for landing that job!!!!

Yeah I hope it's not a big deal at all, because technically, the ad in the paper had said the position didn't even start until July 1.

I think I will just go with that as what I say when asking about time....My dad also said that if I was comfortable with it and they asked about any hestitancy, that it was fine to be honest and say that financially I don't know if it will work for me and that I do have another position on the table. At that point I'd say that I wanted to make the best decision so I need the time.

I'll start with my original statement from my original post and then feel out the meeting if I say anymore. I know they're pretty nice and seem understanding in general so it really shouldn't be an issue.

I just wish they had group health insurance

CarrieS - be careful how you go about it if you decide to decline.  When I was applying for and collecting unemployment, I was required to apply for a certain number of jobs each week and follow up on the apps, and they actually called some of the places I applied to see if I really had or not.  Declining any job offer would have immediately disqualified me from collecting unemployment, and I actually would have had to pay back what I'd already collected.  I don't want you to get screwed over, so check your state's policy on that!

I definitely agree that you should tell them your concerns if they ask why you hesitate, or even mention if if they don't ask, but I'd be careful about asking for more than a day or two. Everyone I've ever seen go through a job search, myself included, had to get back with the employer later that day, or the next day at the latest. Once my brother asked until 5pm (it was 1pm when they called) and they told him that they couldn't guarantee that the job would still be available then, because they were looking at so many applicants! It was completely ridiculous, especially considering that taking the job would mean he would have to move!... but I don't know how long employers want to wait around to know what your decision is

Alrighty, I've decided I'm going to accept this job; They actually offered me a lot more than the base salary they mentioned to me in the interview, and it's an amount that's within my preferred range

As far as insurance goes, it basically boils down to either $400/month if I go through the church (and they only do medical, no dental), or around $200/month if I get it on my own (that would be medical AND dental). So, I'll be getting it on my own, and after that, my salary is still in the range I prefer, so it's livable

I seriously think that the job duties in this position will give me great experience for doing future Admin roles, so I'm excited about starting. There's a lot to do, but that's what I need!

The job doesn't start until July 3rd, but I was aware of that from the start so I'm cool with that. I'll just get unemployment till then

Yay!

I found it in our local newspaper; Basically it was a rare thing too, since Admin/Secretarial jobs are sparse here. Otherwise, my job search has been via Monster or the newspaper here for the bigger city in the state
