healthful lifestyle w/o weightloss?
Permalink Closed

I have recently started trying to eat more healthfully and exercise regularly.  High cholesteral and heart problems run in my family.  I have always been blessed with a high metabolism and have never had to battle any weight issues, so I just ate what I wanted and haven't really worked out since undergrad.  My whole life I have been told I am too skinny...but I never did anything to actively stay that way. (I know...my husband says that it is a problem people would love to have...but it sucks too)

Now, I had a blood test, and everything was good.  My total cholesteral was 179, which I think is okay...but my bad cholesteral was 99 (it is supposed to be under 100).  That is too close for comfort for me.

I have started to be a little more conscious of my food choices and have taken up running at least 3 days a week (about 1 to 1.5 miles).  My problem is this: I have lost a few pounds...not much...but enough that my family says I look way too thin.

How do I eat right and exercise without losing weight?  Is my only option to eat more?  I plan to discuss this with my doctor during my next routine visit, but until then...any tips?

I wish i had your problem! I think you have to eat more, but you could fosuc it on healthy things that are just heavier. Like peanut butter. Mmmm. Tons of protein and heathy oils, but still pretty high in calories. And bananas- healthy, but probably the most "fattening" fruit around.

Many thin people actually have high cholesterol - unless you're overweight or are having other issues it's not something that's usually suspected.  180 isn't really high per se, but it's up there a bit.  FH (who works in the cardiology field) has gone to multiple conferences about cholesterol recently, and the general consensus is that the currents standards of what's considered 'normal' cholesterol is still too high for optimal health.

I would increase your protein intake (fish, egg whites, soy, lean meats, etc) as well as 'good fats' (avacado, olive oil, nuts, etc).  You could also try doing a food journal for a few days and then tallying up all your calories and the like, just to get a feel for how much you're actually consuming.  Then you could try adding in an additional 200 or 300 calories per day (so basically a small meal or 2 decent snacks) to bring you back up to a more healthy weight.  It still needs to be healthy, nourishing food though so make sure it includes lots of whole grains, dairy, and fruits and vegetables too.

IIRC, you have to burn an 3,500 calories more than your intake to lose 1 lb.  I would assume the reverse is also true.  You might want to try a different exercise regimen - cutting down the running a bit and adding some weights and maybe swimming into the mix.  That way you're still getting the cardiovascular benefits, but your body doesn't go into automatic fat-burning mode.

Elle, that's great advice!

My only other thought is to focus on eating foods that lower bad cholesterol and increase good cholesterol, like oatmeal and avocados. (Sorry, I know there are more but those are two that I really like, so I eat them a lot.)

Edited b/c I can't spell.

Jahni - I do not think cake is the answer...although...it can't hurt, right!!!?????  And this is all Adam's fault making me run so much!!!

Elle - Thanks so much for your help.  I've thought about the food journal thing...but I have no clue how many calories are in anything.  I can read the calories and fat on a box of something, but I don't know how to add up calories in an entire meal or expecially when eating out of the house.

I do need to do some weights, and have wanted to but I don't pay to use a gym and don't want to so running was free and convenient.  My hubby has a few free weights, I'll have him teach me a few things.

I LOVE avocados and bananas and peanut butter, so I'll definitely have not problem eating more of them...I don't really get that much of either right now.  I've been eating sushi like 3-4 days a week too...and my hubby isn't so sure that is helping me either.

I'll just try to read up on it more so that I am more knowledgeable about food and health in general.

what about trying protein shakes?  some of them have an insane amount of calories, and as long as you find one that's not full of artificial ingredients, it would be a great way to add calories in a healthy way.

i would go to a health food store to find one that's healthy.
