I know some people are offended by them when they have the real thing, but personally I say who cares. If someone can't afford the real thing, I think it's good that they can get the next best thing. I have a few Coach's and I feel good knowing it's the real thing, but when I couldn't afford Coach, I most definitely bought fakes until I could get real ones. Now that I have the real ones, I don't think I could ever go back to fakes, but I guess it would depend on the item.

I notice you're new...welcome!

There are lots of girls on here who hate fakes, but I voted who cares. I have a real LV speedy, along with a DKNY and some Cole Haans that I got for 50% or more off. I also have a few knockoffs.

What I really hate is when the knockoffs are SOOO bad that no one would mistake them for the real thing. Like fake LV monogram bags that have the wrong symbols, or fake Coach logo bags where the C's are actually G's. What's the point in that??

Exactly....u took the words right out my mouth

My friend and I went to the local mall this past weekend. We were laughing so hard at the knockoffs they sale in the little booths in the middle of the mall. I just don't understand that either!!

I personally can't stand fake LV, Coach or Gucci, or any other knockoffs that are logo-y.
But I can definitely appreciate designer-inspired.  I think most mall stores carry a version of something that was initially seen on the runway anyway.

Also, the trendiness of the item has a lot to do with it for me.  I won't hesitate to buy an authentic pair of Chanel sunglasses or Gucci bag that will last me several years, but if it's a trendy piece of clothing or accessory I won't be able to wear after the season, I would rather not spend big bucks on that.

I'm not a big fan of "fakes" (as in presenting itself as the real thing) but I have no problem with knockoffs or designer inspired, especially for trendy things like the Louboutin/JS shoes.

Imho, fakes are tacky. They ruin the integrity of true desingers. Why pretend? Take that $80 you'd spend on a cheap plastic fake and buy a nice quality bag.

Yeah, I am of the belief that every bag out there is in some way "inspired by" something else. I have "knock offs" that I didn't even know were knock offs until i came to this site - I am no handbag expert (i'm better at recognizing designer bags but still not great). I agree that I don't like the the LV, coach, obvious logo cheapies, but other than that, go for it. I'm not spending $500 on a bag. I won't say "never" but it's just not my thing & if someone else doesn't like my $20 cheap bag I carry I really don't care. I buy a bag if I like the shape & color & I'm not going to pass on it because it's similar to a designer bag.

Okay, I am totally confused by the difference between

  • designer-inspired
  • fake
  • knock-off
  • any other term to describe these bags

I've heard these terms before, but I tought they were interchangable. If anyone could explain this, it would be appreciated. Pictures to illustrate the difference would help too.

Fake or knock-off to me is like a bag that has LV's all over it when it's not a louis vuitton bag (it's made in some factory by children).

Desinger inspired is a bag that resembles a desinger bag but does not pretend to be by that desinger. Example: A BR bag that looks like a Lv but has banana republic labeled inside, not Louis Vuitton.

This is how I think of it too - exactly what Jen said.

Like this is "inspired by" Mark Jacobs
cheapie fake
Real deal
If i carried that first bag, I'd buy it because I like the shape & color but no one would mistake it for a Mark Jacobs & I'm not pretending to have one. But for me, $20.95 vs. $975 for a white bag that is going to get ruined, it's really a no brainer. I realize not everyone feels that way, but hey, I do so that's all that counts for me.

But there are LV all over that have LV tags & claim to be an LV but aren't - I say that's a "fake" to me. And a "knock off" is a bag that is shaped like an LV but has something different than an LV on them, like hearts or something .

I voted who cares, BUT...

logo knockoff's are pretty silly, I can't believe anyone even buys the ones that are so obvious with different letters and such.  Now, the really good fakes...the very illegal ones I presume, I could actually understand someone young purchasing, but I feel like I am too old for that and I don't think logo bags are so great anyway, yes even LVs.

as for the inspired by bags, I have no problem with at all.  I personally don't like fakes for myself, but if I were in my early twenties, I would probably be all over them.

I don't mind bags that resemble the same styles as designer bags, but look-a-like logos, eeew.

I hate fakes. Designer inspired is ok though for like shoes or clothing, but I don't really care for designer inspired bags.

Here is my take:

This is the real thing, a Chloe Paddington from Neiman Marcus $1,720

NMOS6_V6383

Designer-inspired:

Product ImageLock Trim Satchel from JC Penney $40 (faux leather) You will not find the real name on this bag anywhere.

Knock-Off

You will find numerous websites that sell these.  Pretty much duplicated with the same imprinted brand name, tags, logos, etc.  They will state in small words that these are not real.  But at $139 that is quite spendy for how cheap quality it looks. (heck, the JCP one looks nicer!)

Fake:

You get the same above but they claim to be authentic.  This website didn't have the Chloe bag but here is a good example:

http://www.edesignershop.net/product_p/gucci-130779-chocolate-brown.htm

A Gucci handbag for $429!  They claim they are real, but only a fool would believe that!
