Veggie Gals....Meatless Products..
Permalink Closed

so i was walking down the street and there was a stand with free vegetarian booklet.  i grabbed it thinking i might find some good recipes.  well, i think i read a bit too much, and saw too many pictures because i have an urge to throw out all meat products in our freezer.  i won't go into details, but i'm thinking about a slow transition (i'll probably continue to eat eggs, dairy, and fish) into being a vegetarian.  the problem is that i live with a meat loving guy.

so i need everyone's help.  i stopped at the supermarket today, but i wasn't happy with the prices, and then i remembered that Trader Joe's has some good prices and possibly good meatless products.

so morningstar vs. boca vs. Trader Joe's vs Quorn vs. Amy's.

any other recs?  i've done some research, but what brand or where do you get the best meatless products?

thanks so much ladies.

Dr. Preagers!! they seriosuly have the best veggie burgers by far and they have some other interesting thing too.

For "chicken" type things, my favorite is quorn.

I usually prefer morningstar to boca, but they are pretty similar. IMO, they're at the bottom of the list though. They're OK, but nothing great. I DO use the MF crumbles to make a good chili and tacos with though.

I second the Dr. Preagers recommendation - they are very good and TJs sells them.

I also like Morningstar spicy black bean burgers and original boca burgers, but I the boca burgers are more of an aquired taste.  I think TJs sells some Morningstar products also.

Morningstar Corndogs are soooooooooooo good!

For everything else (fake ground sausage/beef, etc) we like this brand called Light Life.  We usually find it in the produce section with the organic veggies - alot of their stuff is refrigerated instead of frozen.

I prefer morningstar to boca.  I find boca burgers to be greasier.  I second the corndog rec and add that the chic patties to be tasty.  I would skip the breakfast sasauges.

Definitely MorningStar Farms is better than Boca or Gardenburger ... by far.

Amy's meals are delish, but they never go on sale!

I'm vegetarian partly because I hate meat and don't like things that taste too meaty, so I may not be the best person to get recommendations from, but I love Morningstar's chicken pot pie. I had to keep checking the box to make sure I wasn't eating chicken, because the texture was so chicken-y (at least as much as I can remember - its been 17 yrs since I ate meat).

I prefer Morningstar to Boca. I like Morningstar's buffalo wings, fake bacon, and corn dogs. I also love Amy's, but except for her no chicken noodle, I never eat anything that is meat-like. And I basically love any veggie dog that is put in front of me.

I like Morningstar and Amy's. I think Boca stuff tastes like meat (I'm told I'm wrong, but I haven't had meat in like 10 years) and that grosses me out. I like Amy's because pretty much nothing in her line is fake meat.

I love Morningstar everything. The burgers are my favorite and I also love the chicken patties, buffalo wings, philly cheese steak burgers and tomato basil burgers. I've also heard good things about Dr. Preggers but we don't have TJ's and I only get to Whole Foods every once in a while so I haven't really had a chance to try a lot of their products. I'm not a huge Boca or Garden Burger fan. For the most part I like Quorn and Amy's but I tend to buy mostly Morningstar.

thanks ladies.  if anyone has any other good sites, recs., etc... for me i would really appreciate it.  i pretty much rely on fish and chicken now, but i don't think i can go back to chicken anymore.

i think i'm going to try out Morningstar and Trader Joe's for now.  And Amy's might be worth getting a Costco membership for.

Dr. Praegers are good. I prefer Gardenburger brand burgers to mosrningstar farms or boce. Morningstar would be my second choice as far as the burgers go. MF crumblers are great, the black bean burger is yummy. I do like boca's spicy chicken pattie, and I caouldn't eat without MF veggie wing-dings. They are fantastic.

My man is a bonified carnivor too, but we don't have any trouble figuring out meals.

Pick up a vegetarian magazine or two, and look through the Mooswood series cookbooks. That will be a good start for you.

thanks!  i ordered a couple books and found some websites, which can be helpful, but a lot of them have the all or nothing mentality.  like if you're not vegan, why bother.

it's been a week for me and it's been a lot easier than i thought.  i still cook my bf meat, but i don't eat it.  it's hard to cook it for him, but i don't want to push anything on him.  i just hope that he eats the rest of the meat in our place sooner than later.

I hate anything that tastes too meaty.  I like Garden burgers, and Amy’s for the pizza snacks.  I wanted to mention two brands I didn’t see anyone post yet.  Both of these are available at Whole Foods (well for sure at the Edgewater NJ location not sure about the NYC locations).

Health is Wealth – I love their “munchees”, great frozen spring rolls, pizza snacks, pot stickers.  They taste better when cooked in the over instead of microwave.  http://www.healthiswealthfoods.com/products/munchees.htm

Sunshine Burger – this is my absolute favorite meal.  I’ll eat the patty alone like a little steak with a salad, I love making a wrap or burger with it too.  It’s not meaty tasting it’s hard to describe, the consistency is more like a falafel.   http://www.sunshineburger.com/593774.html
