renting a car/upgrade

someone told me that when you're renting a car, you should reserve a size or 2 smaller than what you need, b/c most times they end up upgrading you.  we have to rent a car when we go to my cousin's wedding next month, and there will be 5 of us, plus luggage.  so we will def. need a pretty big car.

so should i rent a medium size car (which will be less $$) and hope that they give us a larger one?  (b/c i guess we could always say we changed our mind when we got there if we didn't get a upgrade and just pay for the bigger car)  or should i just rent what we need?

If you have 5 people AND luggage, I would just reserve the size you need.  You wouldn't want to have to worry about renting two separate vehicles if they rent out the size you want.

If you get a compact or economy, you get upgraded a lot because the economy and compact cars are in short supply and thus there are often not that many on the lot.  If you rent a midsize, this is one of the largest inventories on the lot generally (because it is the default size for most business rentals) and in all likelihood you will not be upgraded for free.  That being said, they generally do offer you an upgrade for X dollars in most cases at the counter.  If you want to risk it, unless you are going to a "high tourist" area during a big event (spring break, etc.), then I think you would be fine taking the risk and seeing if you could get an upgrade deal at the counter.  I travel about 70-90% for my job and consistently get asked if I want to upgrade from my midsize for $5-$10/day.
