What to do with old computer?
Permalink Closed

I have one of the original blue iMacs from 1998 that I need to get rid of. It's just been sitting on the floor of my room. It still functions, has OS X on it, but it's just really slow.

What should I do with it? I was thinking about putting it on Craig's List, but not sure if they charge money for a listing. Anyone know about Craig's List, or have any other suggestion?

Getting money for it isn't the main goal, although it would be a nice bonus. I just want it out of my room!

craig's list rocks. There is no listing fee. I listed some furniture on there when I was moving. My mom listed her old car and sold it for more than what the dealer would give her, plus she didn't have to give craig a penny in commission!

Other options are donate it to a school or a library if you don't want to deal with craig's list.

That's a really good question and if anyone has any suggestions I'd like to know too. I've always heard that you should never give your old computers away to a stranger because even if you think you delete all personal information, there are ways that hackers can find stuff out about you and all your personal info. I don't know if it's true, but it's what I've heard.

first, make sure that you take out all your personal info.

the best option since you probably won't get a lot of money for it, is to donate it so that you can get a tax refund on it.

for craigslist there's no listing fee, just make sure someone is home when they come to pick it up.

I agree with craigslist- my DH collects old macs & I'm sure others do as well.
