So, last Friday night I lost my cell phone. It was only about 7 months old and I paid about $90 for it. I went and looked at the 2 places where I thought it might be, called it a few times, and asked friends I was out with that night to see if they knew anything.
Nothing. It was apparently gone forever, so I went and bought a new cell on Saturday. It cost $95, which I charged to my Visa, which I really shouldn't be doing right now. Part of me doesn't care about the Visa charge so much since right now my debt is high enough for me to be nonchalant about it. I figured I'd just make an extra payment next month anyways, to take care of the phone purchase.
Miracle of all miracles happened when yesterday, I received a phone call from one of the dorm front desks here, saying they had my lost phone! I was pretty surprised, but now I'm sort of in a dilemma.
I'm thrilled to get my old phone back, since I weirdly become attached to stupid items. I can also return the new phone and get my CC credited back, since I have 30 days after purchase to do so.
The dilemma? I technically like the new phone better and sort of want to keep it, even though I know that the smart me would return it and get the money back.
Financially, while I shouldn't be running up my CC debt, I know that I'll have the phone part paid next month, and I'm not screwed for money so this charge wouldn't put me into the hole.
I'm just really torn between keeping the new phone and returning it for $$ back.
i think cell phones are good for about a year (if you're like me, and drop them alot, or at least want to stay current with technology.) of course anythign you get will be outdated in a month, but it's' been my experience that right around a year is a good time to say "you know what, i'm ready for an update)
soooooooooooo
right now, you've only had the one phone for 7 months, but you paid $90 for it - that's more than $10 just for a phone! i would return the new phone, and keep the old one for another five, THEN update.
that's what i say.
plus you don't need the new phone, you don't hate your old one, you actually kindof like it, and you're trying not to run any CC debt!
return the phone. you're moving soon right? you would not believe how expensive moving can be, even if your company pays for the move. plus, once you pay off your credit card, you can use the money to furnish your new place and get to know your new surroundings without worrying about $$$.

Well that's the other part of the dilemma: I'm not eligible for an upgrade until January 2008 now. If I were to buy another phone in 5 months, I'd be paying full retail price for it
carrie....... return it! it's not worth $90 when you have a perfectly good phone that you've already said you like. and p.s. - till 2008??? your service provider sucks!!!
I think I'm leaning towards returning now....I know I'll hate myself later when I want the debt gone and realize that being an idiot by keeping the phone has raised my CC debt another $90.
Yeah, 2008. Basically, last year I upgraded my phone twice, which involves renewing my 2 year contract every time. And since I just got this upgrade, that extended it by another 4 months. So really the 2008 deadline is my own fault for choosing to upgrade so much
