so DH and I are seriously considering moving back to NY when our lease is up next winter. Has anyone doen this before? What's the best way to line up jobs, etc? Neither of us work for a place where we would be able to get a transfer or anything liek that (they're kind of small/ location based). How long before should I start sending out resumes? Any other advice?

I have no advice, having never gone through a sitch like yours but so exciting! I love NYC and would live there if circumstances permitted it. (Or if I had balls. )

I would start working on updating your resumes and perfecting them now.  I would also start researching the job market and possibly start sending out resumes now for places you are "cold" calling/sending resumes if you really are interested in the place.  As far as actually starting to really apply and interview I would think you would need to wait until the fall but I may be wrong in this.

not NYC. That was the original plan, but we're looking at the Albany area now. It's close to where we grew up (and close to all the fam.), still an easy trip into the city for a weekend, and real estate is dirt cheap right now.  Its also a decent area for both of us professionally.

Ooohhh. But still! Anywhere close to NYC is a-okay with me. I think Aurora (I almost typed her old screen name!) had some good advice. I'd wait until you're a little closer to moving to start applying for open positions.

ooh- I totally forgot that you live up there! How fun! I'm actually pretty open to what I'm looking for- I'd be willing to stay in fundraising (I could stay in education but would love to do it for a non-profit!) or I could put my degree to work and do something in government or lobbying. I took a quick look over the weekend and there seemed to be a lot of options for me up there (and hopefully less competetive than down here where everyone and their brother not only wants to work i nthe fiels, but has an advanced degree and is willing to work for cheap!)

I wish there was an easier way than just waiting... we have to give 60 days notice if we're not going to renew our lease and I'd hate to jump the gun and not have a job lined up! Maybe one of us could go up earlier so that at least we'd have some sort of income....

thats what I plan on doing... how far out though do you think it's ok to apply? Like, if I don't plan on moving to the area until Dec., is it ok to start applyingto things in September?

honestly there is a LOT of cute stuff on the market right now. any idea if something abnormal is going on? We'd be looking to buy in the fall- think it'll stay like this?

I'm totally taking you up on that offer too. I don't know too many people in the immediate area anymore so if you'd keep your eyes open that would be great! If you happen to have any contact in the mental retardation/ healthcare admin. field let me know too -that's what DH is in, and he has lots of contacts (his Mom is in a similar field a little farther south) but if you hear of anything let me know!
