when to retouch highlights?
Permalink Closed

About 2 months ago I got highlights in my hair in a salon for the first time. Previously I had always colored my hair at home. I realize it differs from person to person, but...

I was wondering how often you girls with highlights get yours freshened up (mainly to avoid roots)?

Also, here are some pics of mine. The first one shows the roots, the second shows the side view. The side view looks fine, but does the top look too "rooty"?

Ahhh... gotta love digi cams!

usually there comes a point where i just can't stand it anymore.  like it needs to be done right that minute.  i think yours looks ok and couple probably be ok for about 2-3 weeks.  it seems like the color blends well enough, that you can go longer.  great color btw!

i think you look fine.  i agree with shopgirl82 in saying another 2-3 weeks and you'll be wanting them freshened up.

if my hair is darker with really blonde highlights- i need to go every 6 weeks.

if it is honey brown with blond highlights- i can stretch it to 8 weeks.

if your hair is more blendable and natural- that is when you can stretch it out longer.  me, i like to get funky, so i have to go more often!

i stretch it to every 7-8 weeks.  I have medium brown hair with light blonde and red highlights.  I measure it and when its about 1.5-2 inches that's when I go.  I think you can stretch it out a few more weeks.

My hair used to blend more - it was like very light brown w/honey blonde highlights and I would go every 8 weeks.

Last time I had my highlights done, I went drastic and got darker brown w/light blonde chunks, way more funky.  The outgrowth is driving me nuts and I think I'll have to go at 6 weeks!

I think yours blends nicely and you could go a couple more weeks.

If it bothers you and you have the moola, then get it touched up.  Personally, I can't wait more than 6 weeks without the roots driving me crazy, but when I ask others about my roots they say they're not that noticable, so I guess it's more of a personal thing.

Yours look about the same as mine do at 8 weeks...you can stand to relax for a couple of more weeks.

When I was trying to maintain regular highlights, I would go every 10 weeks because that's the most I could afford. If I had waited any longer I would've gone insane.

i get mine done every eight weeks.  i usually need it pretty badly by that point, because my hair grows really fast.  but i don't have a base color--it's just my natural color (kind of a light brown) and i get blonde highlights on top of that.

I always thought you were very blonde! Am I thinking of someone else? Or did you change your color recently?

ETA: Sorry for the hijack, Z4. I think your highlights look fine for now. I usually go about every 10-12 weeks for mine. My hair grows fast, but I like the way highlights look when they're a little grown out.

I go every 8-10 weeks because I really can't afford to go more. Luckily, my hair stylist understands and has adjusted the color so that it's not as noticeable growing out.

i think yours looks natural enough that you could probably go another few weeks. when clients ask me how often to get retouched, i alway say it's personal preference. i had some people come in every month, some come in every six months (which looked awful, imo, but to each her own)...

what you could always do if you want to stretch out the length of time between getting highlights, is getting a "base break" which just lightens the roots enough to make the growth less noticeable. (but i think that's reserved for more drastic highlights)
