Our friends are doing a dinner party (murder mystery) thing and it's based in the 1950's. The girls and I are checking out things like poodle skirts and such on ebay...but what else? I can easily put my hair up in a pony, and wear a white, tucked in shirt...am thinking saddle shoes, but I really don't like flats...would rather wear heels, but I don't think heels go with poodle skirts. What about ballet flats? I would just want a cheap pair as I won't wear them in regular rotation at all (I am not a ballet-flat girl) but I think they might suit me better than saddles.

Has anyone done this, or does anyone have suggestions (besides ebay) for finding inexpensive items like this?

I'm thinking for DH - assuming he will get into this - about getting one of those retro-type bowling shirts and possibly...just possibly, getting him a duck tail / pompadour wig.

When the hostess told me of the plans, my first question was, "Are we going to dress?" LOL I can have a good time shopping for just about anything. I hope everyone gets really into it; I think the pics would be great.

Any advice is most welcome. I don't sew, and don't want to pay my seamstress to make anything, so would rather buy ready-made.

if you don't want to go the "sock-hop" fifties route, you could go the "pin-up" route... a really slim pencil or tulip skirt, a really fitted short sleeve fuzzy sweater, hair up in a ribbon, fishnets, some vampy peep-toe pumps. not sure your boobage situation, but if i were dressing this part, i'd stuff my bra to look as curvy as possible. ;) that could be cute and might be easier to put together with pieces you already own or could easily find in a store (as opposed to the poodle skirt/saddle shoe pieces).

how fun - i love those mystery dinner things.
