Sorry for posting here rather than in career and education - hoping to get more traffic...
A former student of mine asked me to write her a letter of recommendation - she is going to apply to law schools next year. She took a class from me about 3 years ago and she was great personality-wise, though not a top student (she didn't have as good a grasp for languages as some of my other students!). She was very determined and interested and apparently got something from my class, because she later became a linguistics major She now works as a paralegal. I want to write her a good letter, but am not sure exactly what law schools are looking for. Law school people, can you give me any ideas of character traits etc. that are good to mention in a letter?
I'm not sure what they schools look for in letters, but important traits for students are writing ability, analytical skills, firm grasp of logic, etc. If your former student has a great personality , I would think that traits like confidence, good speaking skills, willingness to participate in class discussion, would be good things to write about. HTH!
I'd say the key trait would be diligence. Other traits that might fit your student--honest, hard working (although that's sort of the same as diligent), determined, has a positive attitude, very mature for her age, etc. You could say she is a bright young lady even if she wasn't the top student grade-wise (I wouldn't mention that of course). That's all I can think of right now.
I guy I work with recently wrote a really good law school recommendation letter for me. I thought it was good because he spoke about me on a very personal basis, which made the letter much more readable and less like a form letter. Also, he spoke about my being honest and ethical, traits I never would have thought to mention in the letter but which are important for a law student / attorney. HTH! Good luck.
