I want to give him something very nice - maybe I can make something? But what do 1 yr. old boys LIKE?!

How about a pull toy?  Or a book like the very hungry catepillar where there are things to touch but it's chubby board so it's sturdy?  I don't know very much about their development, but he might like a some stacking rings?

When my niece turned 1 I bought her a child size upholstered chair.  It was more suited to be a 2nd birthday gift though.  So I usually take the clothes route.

i don't think many one-year olds really have gift preferences. you can still get away with a ridiculously cute outfit at 1-year and parents wil appreciate it too since they are still growing so fast at 1-year. books & wooden puzzles are some of my favorite gifts to give. (if you want some book titles let me know) or any classic, well-made toy that doesn't make annoying sounds, light up or require batteries is my rule for one-year olds. a pull-toy, a wooden rocking horse or shape sorter comes to mind.

ITA w/ this.  I've given a nice wooden pull toy and a little wooden puzzle to go with it--you can get nice ones at independent little toy stores that sell Haba toys and other European brands (Haba is my favorite).  You could also do a nice set of blocks.  I agree that books are good as well.  Hotcocoa-I'm curious to see what book titles you would recommend.  My favorite is "Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See."  So adorable and a nice rhym to it.  I have a few others that I like but nothing that stands out or that is very unusual (Sandra Boynton, Goodnight Moon etc.)

Ok lucy is screaming, gotta go!

That has been my 3-year old nephew's faaaaavoite book for as long as he could comprehend it. He loves that he can "read" it just by looking at the next page.

As far as gifts, I think books and puzzles are a woderful idea. I have a couple of other ideas, if you want to go another route, though. This was my nepew's absolute favorite gift he received for his first birthday:

Although the description says 18 months and up, he was just fine at 12.

A nice walker/ride-on (I don't know what they're called) might be nice. My nephew got a Big Digger when he was 1-1/2 and he still plays with it. He loved it so much that he got another from Santa last Chistmas

Toys!  Once they start walking, they love to have something to push or ride on.  My son has a ride/push airplane with lots of buttons and sounds, and he has a ride/push firetruck with no frills, it doesn't make a difference to him, he adds his own sound effects anyway.  Though he does LOVE to push buttons that make sounds and music.

we are big, big, big on books over here. this is just scratching the surface, but here are some of my son's favorites:

these are the best introduction to art for little ones. they are board books and each piece of art is accompanied by a small rhythmicly written verse which tells a little story. in addition to van gogh and matisse, the authors also have amonet, degas and renior version:

these board books are hilarious and the illustrations are darling. there is also one called "big/little":

not a board book, but another favorite. the story and illustrations are so sweet:

we love the pigeon at our house! there are other pigeon books by this author as well:

also by mo willems:

by one of my favorite illustrators. both of these stories are about little boys!

just a sweet little story about being brave:

I would go to Ikea and buy any or all of the following toys.  I have 3 boys and many of their favorite toys are from Ikea (plus they are very inexpensive).

MULAMULAMULAMULAMULA

And they have the most adorable furniture:

KRITTERMAMMUT

or...my boys have always loved books.  Here are some of their favorites:

The Monster at the End of This Book (Little Golden Book)

and DVD's are always a great gift:

Barney - Now I Know My ABC'sGood Morning Maisy

Hotcocoa--Thanks so much for the recommendations!  We love books here too but haven't found a ton of books that we just love yet.  My husband and I go to museums quite a bit and I always hit up the children's section at the gift shops (there is actually an exhibit here in DC at one of the art galleries called "Celebrating Life through Illustrations of children's Literature" or something like that that we can't wait to see).  I've seen those art books and wondered about them.   We have some art board books and books on sushi, etc., but Lucy doesn't seem to be that impressed with them (the narration isn't as good).  I'll have to check those out--thanks so much for taking the time to post those.

Also Jen--along the lines of Cortney's suggesion, the "anywhere chair" from pottery barn kids is adorable and would make a really nice 1 yr old birthday gift.  It's great because they can practice their climbing skills.  Here it is:
