Chicago Girls!!
Permalink Closed

Hey I just booked my flight to come to chicago march 23rd - march 26th, I will be visiting a friend who lives there, so let me know if anyone is interested in planning a get together while I am there!

It would also be helpful if someone could compose a list of the stores, boutiques, etc that I MUST go to while I am there... I am so excited about shopping in chicago, i hear it is amazing, but would like to go in with a game plan, and im sure there are all these small cute little shops that I dont want to miss out on.  Maybe some stores to get good bargains, etc?  Really any insight you can give me.. this is my first time in Chicago!

Also, Im super worried about what to pack.. I think I have my day outfits planned out, but could you girls give me some examples of what the 20 somethings are wearing out at night and maybe even during the day, just to ease my worries?

duh, not in chicago but just a piece of advice from one friend to another? sweety, you are a 20 something who can dress with the best of them. stop worrying so much! you are a very stylish girl, just let the true nicoley shine through and don't worry about what other girls are dressing like. just pack what you like and im sure it will be fantastic.

but yeah, check the weather before you go. that's all i got.

HI Nicoley:

First of all, don't worry about what to wear- anything goes as long as you're comfortable- especially for just walking around/hanging out during the day!

As for shopping, of course you'll have to hit Michigan Avenue (Bloomie's, Marshall Field's, Water Tower Mall, H&M and a Filene's Basement, among others)

Oak street is where all the swanky stores are- and there's a Barney's, UO, Aldo and Diesel on Rush...Basically the whole N. Michigan Ave area is a shopper's mecca...:)

As for smaller, cool boutique-y stores, there's so many areas, so I'll just quickly tell you about some of my favorites- wells street (walking distance from Michigan Ave) in the old town area has two several nice boutiques- Sara Jane, Etre and Lill Boutique...Armitage in Lincoln Park also has a ton of cool stores including Active Endeavors, Laurie's shoes (definitely worth checking out) and lots of others...You should also go to Wicker Park (an artsy, hipster neighborhood ) for lots of cool stores- too many to name here, but PM me if you want more info...

As for night time attire- it really depends on where you go/what you're doing...like in any city, there's casual places and swankier ones, so just dress accordingly (like if you're hanging out at a neighborhood pub- anything goes, but step it up if you go to a trendy restaurant/lounge/club- nice jeans, cute shoes, top, etc...) Seriously though, I wouldn't worry about it-since you're a member of this forum, I'm sure you'll be just fine! And like Relrel said, our weather is super crazy, so do check the weather (although it's frequently wrong) and bring some warm stuff that you can layer- you just never know with Chicago weather!

(p.s. for a good resource of what to do/where to go, check out www.metromix.com)

Hope this helps, and have a great time!

I agree w/ Greca. The Armitage/Halstead area is great. Halstead has a Barney's Co-op, The Blue Jeans Bar, and tons of beauty stores, including my favorite, Endo-Exo Apothecary.

I don't know how serious you are about bargain shopping, but you may want to try State Street, which I call bargain row. There is a Filene's Basement, Nordstroms Rack, TJ Maxx, H&M, and Forever 21 all clustered in one block. I was at the Filene's last week and they had tons of Paige Denim and Hudsons. There is also a brand new UO and the soon to be gone Chicago institution, Marshall Field's, where I always seem to find the greatest shoes on clearance. Plus, it is the most beautiful department store. I've gotten non-shopper visitors to go there with me just by promising some great architecture and Chicago history!

Greca gave you really good shopping adivce so there is not much I can add there. Except the Southport area has come great boutiques Krista K among them which is my favorite in the city.

As for what to wear it's still pretty chilly so you'll definately need a coat/scarf/gloves possibly hat as well expecially around Michigan Ave it tends to get really cold. During the day anything goes, jeans mostly comfortable heels or even puma type shoes for walking around. At night most girls I see in bars are wearing jeans the occasional skirt but not often and sexy tops and heels. Depending on what bars you are going to will depend on how dressy you go. Need any advice on resteraunt/bars let me know!

And if you'd like to meet for lunch or drink while you are here PM me!

Oh where are you staying?

i think all the girls offered some great insight.

personally, i would spend one morning/afternoon doing state street shopping, it's a must.  then, if you have energy for more, i would go to rush/state/oak street to hit up a couple smaller stores like anthropologie, urban outfitters, diesel, barneys, bcbg, sugar magnolia (this stores are close to michigan ave too)  this would be a long day, but i wouldn't try to do michignn ave. and state street on the same day.

the next day i would take the train (brown line...it's really easy) to southport.  i would shop those boutiques (redhead boutique, city soles, krista k, dilani shoes) from noon-two or three (they open later) and then take the train to armitage and shop armitage/halsted street till dinner.  on armitage i would stop at art effect, active endeavors, and lori's shoes (those are my personal faves).  on halsted, i would make my way north and stop at francesca's, bebe, arden b, bcbg, betsey johnson, endo-exo, blue mercury, the denim bar, and barney's co-op.

the last day i would shop michigan ave. just because it has most of the mall stores.  the wicker park area that greca mentioned is great, but kinda farther, so i always find it's harder to take visitors who want to do boutique shopping but also michigan ave.  i hope that helps, pm me if you have any questions or want to meet up.

I think shopgirl82 outlined it perfectly for you!  Do you plan on shopping all 3 days that you are here?  If not, I would definitely do Halsted/Armitage and the Southport area for sure.  Michigan Ave and State Street are great, like the others said, but if you can't fit it all in, Mich. Ave and State Street are mainly going to be the stores you could probably find at home.  Halsted & Armitage and Southport are going to be your unique boutiques.

I'm w/the other girls - if you want to meet up - pm me   I know the only day that I won't be around is the 26th.  It'd be fun if you, Collette, shopgirl82, and whoever else could meet up!

I think Shopgirl82 came up with a wonderful shopping plan.  If you have to cut something out though, I would cut out Michigan Ave--but only if you have to!

I would be available for the most part to do lunch or an early dinner if you and the other girls who posted can do it.  I have to work nights that weekend, but I am free during the day.

Thanks again for all the awesome shopping advice!  I am so excited all you girls want to meet up... I definitely can't leave chicago without meeting all of you... So setting up a day to meet for lunch or drinks or something is a MUST!

I have no clue what my schedule is going to be like while I am there, especially since where my friend lives is at "lake-in-the-hills" But i know he has a friend who lives right in the heart of chicago, which is probably primarily where we will be staying.  So what day is best for everyone?  I will be there thursday afternoon (23rd) until sunday evening (26th).  If we set up a day and time, then I can just work my schedule around that.  I will definitely be out every night for drinks so anyone who wants to meet up then as well as lunch or something, that would work too!

Cool, sounds like a great chance to meet you as well as a few other girls in Chicago.  I can do a late lunch or early dinner Friday or Saturday.

How fun!  I could do lunch/early dinner on Saturday.  I could also meet up for drinks Fri or Sat. night.  Sunday is completely out for me though.
